Samsung Electronics has proudly called its Exynos 5 Octa the world’s first mobile application processor with eight cores as well as the industry’s first chip to utilize ARM Big.Little concept. The company also revealed the world’s first smartphone with the most advanced system-on-chip currently available. As it appears now, Samsung Galaxy S4 with Exynos 5 Octa chip will not be available in the U.S. and the majority of European countries.

Samsung initially plans to offer two versions of its flagship smartphone: the GT-I9500 model with Exynos 5 Octa eight-core system-on-chip (four high-performance ARM Cortex-A15 cores at 1.60GHz, four low-power ARM Cortex-A7 cores at 1.20GHz, dual-channel LPDDR3 memory controller, PowerVR SGX 544 graphics core) and 3.5G/HSPA+; as well as the GT-I9505 model with Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 (quad-core Qualcomm Krait 300 microprocessor running at 1.90GHz, Adreno 320 graphics core, 32-bit dual-channel LPDDR3 memory controller, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, no baseband/modem) and 4G/LTE.

Given the different application processors between the Galaxy S4 GT-I9500 and the Qualcomm Galaxy S4 GT-I9505, some variances in the software capabilities and application performance for the two models are expected. Moreover, in the majority of cases the model GT-I9500 will be considerably faster than the one powered by a quad-core system-on-chip.


As it appears, the well-established smartphone markets, such as the U.S. and the majority of the European countries, will not receive the version of the Galaxy S4 smartphone with the faster Exynos 5 Octa processor, reports SamMobile web-site citing a list of , which obtained the details about Samsung’s shipments plans from its sources. While it is believed that eventually France, Germany, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom will eventually receive the model GT-I9500, initially only the GT-I9505 will be available on these markets. Only Russia and Ukraine will get GT-I9500 from the start. Only countries in Asia, Africa and Middle-East will get GT-I9500 initially and select countries will get GT-I9505 eventually.

Given the fact that the U.S. and Europe are the biggest buyers of expensive smartphones, not selling both versions of the Galaxy S4 and provide customers a choice between a fast processor and a fast networking seems an illogical move, unless Samsung has no problems with supply of its own leading-edge chip.

Samsung did not comment on the news-story.

You got the "faster processor" backwards.

1.9 GHz krait is much faster than 1.2 GHz A15, the version with the qualcomm chip is the faster version.

You mean 1.6GHz A15 ?!

Clock for clock A15 is faster than Krait. Let us wait and see if the 0.3Ghz higher clock can offset the clock for clock advantage of A15.
