It is not a secret that Google Android is the most popular mobile operating system on the planet. As it appears, over 1.5 million Android-based devices are sold every day already. In order to sustain or bolster its sales numbers, Google is now looking at inexpensive smartphones that cost around $100 and which address the developing nations.

Eric Schmidt, the chairman of Google, revealed at the AllThingsD conference that Android platform is currently supported by 320 operators in 160 countries, There are 1.5 million activations of Android devices every single day and there are 700 thousand apps in the Play Store. Traditionally, the Google executive did not provide a split between smartphones, tablets and other devices with the current Android installed base.

“We will cross a billion towards the end of this year. That gives you a sense of the reach. Android is the primary vehicle of smartphones – we will quickly get to the $100 price point, which is the key for those next five billion people looking to get connected,” said Mr. Schmidt.

While one billion life-to-date sales of devices does not result in one billion installed based, given the fact that smartphones and tablets are changed every two to three years. However, Google Android may easily challenge Microsoft Windows OS’ installed base sometimes in late 2013 or early 2014.

Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod touch utilize iOS operating system, which is the biggest rival of Google Android. As of calendar Q4 2012, life-to-date sales of Apple iPhone were around 320 million, LTD shipments of iPad were around 121 million, whereas total shipments of all iOS based devices has crossed half of a billion.
