One of the reasons why Apple’s iOS platform is so popular among end-users is because customers know exactly what they get when they purchase iPad or iPhone when it comes to user experience. One of the reasons why Google Android is gaining popularity is because experienced users know that they will be able to customize their products according to preferences. Tim Cook, the head of Apple, promises that in the future the company will allow more customization.

When asked by AllThingsD whether Apple intends allow others to make changes to the home screen or keyboard in the iOS, chief executive of Apple answered indefinitely, but rather positively. Tim Cook promised more freedom with iOS customization, but did not indicate whether additional capabilities will be a part of next-generation iOS 7 operating system, or will be featured in future releases of the platform.

“As for opening up more programming hooks, I think you will see us open up more in the future. But not to the degree that we put the customer at risk of having a bad experience. We think the customer pays us to make certain choices on our behalf. Some want full control, but not the masses. But will we open up more? Yes,” said Tim Cook at the D11 conference.

Chief executive of Apple did not reveal any additional details about iOS 7 at the conference, but did admit that Jonathan Ive, Apple’s chief industrial designer, played a big role in development of the new mobile OS.

“I think I will let you be the judge. Jony Ive has been key to this. There needs to be a blend of hardware, software and services. Having Ive do software and hardware rather than just hardware is part of this, even if Apple always married those. What this did is just amp it up,” said Mr. Cook.

As far as I'm concerned this no different than the PC I buy , be it apple or windows. I can add programs to either of these and I should be able to the same to an ipad or iphone. The best way to look at this is would you accept buying a PC that would only let you run the programs it came with or one that Microsoft said you could purchase ? I don't think so,

Apple needs to get it's collective head out of it's nether region before they go by the wayside in the new world of mobile devices/internet.
Android let's you load what ever programs you want.

I think the mentality at Apple is summed up in one of the sentences by Cook.
"We think the customer pays us to make certain choices on our behalf". Gee I would think if nothing else it be on my (customer) behalf.

Apple is at a crossroads (they've been there before and didn't fair well) and they have to choose if they are going down the "we will dictate what our customers will be allowed to have in a product" (a result of hanging out at Foxconn to much)

or

"We have heard our customers and will deliver the products they want"

I suspect it will be the first and Apple will start down a slide that will turn into an avalanche.

Cook became more "open" during an LSD trip. Unfortunately, it may not be strawberry fields for very long.

Apple lost its main innovator with Jobs now they will have to look elsewhere for innovative ideas.

Why apple will fail-

1. Apple is losing its biggest strength i.e. innovation, we saw in iphone5 (nothing just spec. upgrade).if u don’t have innovations than no one will pay $1000 for apple logo.

2. Apple’s doing something which it shouldn’t do, firstly they are making ARM cpu this is madness in apple’s case coz apple’s cpu used only in apple’s devices and as apple is losing market share so profit in cpu side will be minor on other side huge continuous investment is required for cpu R&D and apple make recently worst mistake ,apple want to make it’s own GPU- listen apple u can make cpu but making a good gpu is much difficult plz learn some lesson by mammoth SONY and TOSHIBA who failed to make a competitive gpu.there is no chance of apple beating nvidia and sooner or later AMD will also enter in mobile segment we have some information about that mysterious AMD ARMv8 design but can’t tell here but one thing is sure that will blow most of all in ARM mobile space.

3. Apple’s SoC is nothing in front of competition, I accept that apple make SoC specially tailored for apple OS but there is another good way to do that don’t waste 4billion dollar every year just to prove that u can make SoC just do partnership with AMD give one time 2billion dollar than 500 million annually this will give u industry’s best ARM product as in gpu front AMD GCN is best and in cpu AMD is specialist of 64 bit computing.

4. If someone is already providing good product and then don’t waste ur money to make “apple’s own”- like apple maps.

5. Stop thinking “all component apples’s made “dream

I would love to see OSX on a super high powered no holds barred 17 or 18 inch laptop. As a Pro Tools user, the lack of a large screen Apple notebook is a real pain.

Perhaps a 4k Screen with top of the line Kaveri APU would be the go. And, drop Thunderbolt for Dock Port.

frnd it's not Kaveri its Kabini,
AMD Kaveri(upcoming )- 1.024TeraFlops @65w TDP, Performance/watt =15.753 GFLOPS /watt
Intel i7 3770k HD Graphics 4000 - 104.0 GFLOPS @77w TDP , Performance/watt=1.3506 GFLOPS /watt
upcoming Kaveri is still more than 11X than top i7 in performance per watt-intel do something ur fort is in danger
