Apple is on track to release an inexpensive version of its iPhone this year, a media report claims. The company’s affordable smartphone will be made of plastic and will be available in different colours. Even though Apple has always been skeptic about a cheap iPhone model, it is reported that the company now plans to sell as many as 20 million low-cost iPhones in Q1 2013.

As expected, Apple will refresh its iPhone with a new premium model this September or October. In addition, the company is projected to finally reveal a specially-designed inexpensive version of the iPhone for the first time since 2007, reports Reuters news-agency. The low-cost Apple iPhone will come in plastic casing in a range of 5-6 colours to differentiate it from the more expensive model that has traditionally come only in black and white. The phone is projected to cost $99 or below with a contract.

Experimental production of the new handsets is projected to start next month, whereas mass production is projected to commence in August. It is believed that Apple will introduce both premium and affordable iPhones at a special event in September.

“Trial production was originally planned to start in June, but the mixing of colours is taking longer than expected as Apple has very high and idealistic standards," one source with knowledge of the matter is reported to have said.

Apple has never really believed in specially-designed low-cost iPhone model and claimed that it could serve price-sensitive customers by selling them previous-generation models. Nonetheless, if the information about inexpensive iPhones is correct, then Apple has ordered 20 million plastic smartphones with the aim to sell them in Q4 2013.

Foxconn Electronics will traditionally build the premium version of the Apple iPhone, whereas Pegatron will assemble low-cost flavor of the smartphone, it is reportd.

Apple, Foxconn, and Pegatron did not comment on the news-story.

Just release the 4.7" iPhone already. They are already lagging way behind competition. Only this they have on pair now is their iOS and the GPS and Wi-Fi hardware. Until now couldn't find any top phone that can match those...
