Microsoft Corp. on Friday released Office Mobile for iPhone, which is available at no extra charge from the Apple App Store for Office 365 Home Premium and Office 365 ProPlus subscribers. The iPhone app enables Office content viewing and on-the-go content editing capabilities. Surprisingly, but the software giant did not release a version of the Office suite for Apple iPad.

Users of Office 365 on Apple iPhone can access, view and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents from anywhere. The formatting and layout remain intact when viewing, editing or adding comments, thanks to support for charts, animations, SmartArt graphics and shapes, so the documents look the way they should on personal computers afterwards.

Office Mobile has been optimized for the small screen of Apple iPhone so users could get the important things done quickly. For instance, the Slide Navigator allows to page through PowerPoint presentations fast, while Speaker Notes helps to practice presentations on the go. When reviewing Word documents on the phone, the Resume Reading feature takes end-users to the exact point in the document where he or she left off on their computer. When working with others, users can review comments in Word and Excel documents on their phones and add their own.

With Office Mobile, users can quickly and easily access their Office content in the cloud on SkyDrive or SkyDrive Pro.

While by launching Office 365 for the iPhone Microsoft admitted that the Apple iPhone is now used by loyal customers of Microsoft Officer, the company decided not to enable the same application for Apple iPad, which is also based on the iOS platform. The reasons for this are unclear: Microsoft competes both against the iPhone and the iPad with Windows Phone 8 and Windows RT, respectively. Therefore it makes sense to either ignore existence of both devices, or release software for both devices. Perhaps, a version of Office 365 for Apple iPad is just still in the works?
