A high-ranking executive from Hewlett-Packard has confirmed that the company is developing a new breed of smartphones that will be the first handsets from the firm since 2001, when the company discontinued its Palm-branded Pre smartphones. Unfortunately, the spokesperson did not provide any details about the upcoming products or implied on the timeframe of the release.

"The answer is yes [we are readying a smartphone] but I cannot give a timetable. It would be silly if we say no. HP has to be in the game," said Yam Su Yin, HP’s senior director of consumer PC and media tablets in Asia Pacific region, in an interview with The Indian Express.

According to IDC, smartphone shipments are expected to grow 32.7% year-on-year reaching 958.8 million units in 2013, up from 722.5 million units shipped last year. Besides, this year shipments of smartphones will exceed those of feature-phones, which is another proof that HP has to enter the market.

HP is unlikely to adopt the webOS operating system or Microsoft Windows Phone platform for its new smartphones. Since recently the company unveiled Google Android-based tablets, it is more probable that smartphones will use the same OS.

Previously Hewlet-Packard promised to release a new smartphone sometimes in 2014, but in the light of dropping PC sales and growing importance of smartphones that plan might have been accelerated. According to the HP executive, the company wants to offer a "differentiated experience" to consumers.

"Being late you have to create a different set of proposition. There are still things that can be done. It is not late. When HP has a smartphone, it will give a differentiated experience," said Yam Su Yin.
