Microsoft Corp. on Monday officially reduced pricing of its Surface media tablet that is based on Windows RT operating system. From now on, Microsoft’s entry-level slate will cost starting from $349, which will make it more competitive against Apple iPad and Apple iPad mini.
The world’s largest software designer has cut the pricing of all its Surface RT tablets. Starting today, Surface RT 32GB costs $349 in Microsoft’s online and retail stores, whereas Surface RT 64GB is priced at $449. The tablets with 32GB of NAND flash storage and touch cover is available for $449, while the device with 64GB memory and touch cover is priced at $549.
Although Microsoft Surface RT is probably the most successful product running Windows RT operating system, its sales are believed to be lower than those of Surface Pro tablet that is powered by Windows 8 OS.
Windows RT is a fully-fledged Microsoft operating system compatible with ARM-architecture application processors and incompatible with the vast majority of programs developed for Windows, something that clearly discourages anyone from using it. Given the fact that it carries Windows name, it confuses many buyers as people expect compatibility with their applications. Many PC makers, including Toshiba and Samsung, decided not to offer Windows RT-based devices early in the lifecycle of the OS so to avoid the misunderstandings. Microsoft is currently working hard to improve software support for the Windows RT platform.
Since Windows RT platform has not got really popular among end-users, manufacturers who actually started to use it for their products now have to either discontinue them or sell at substantial discounts. Microsoft may be testing how flexible the demand towards Surface RT is and whether low demand can be cured with low prices in the future.
Microsoft Surface with Windows RT operating system features 10.6" screen with 1366*768 resolution. The media tablets are based on Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core system-on-chip with advanced graphics adapter and are equipped with 2GB of RAM, 32GB/64GB NAND flash storage, two 720p HD cameras, stereo speakers and two microphones, will feature ambient light sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope and compass. The slates come with 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 wireless connectivity and feature full-size USB 2.0, microSDXC card slot, headset jack, HD video out port and cover port. Microsoft includes Office Home and Student 2013 RT Preview (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote), Windows Mail and Windows Messaging, SkyDrive, Windows Internet Explorer 10, Bing, Xbox Music, Xbox Video, and Xbox Games apps
