Although Apple has historically produced many different products, it was iPod personal digital music player that made the company a leading consumer electronics company. Up until recently the iPod was the best-selling product line of the company with well over one third of a billion units sold. However, in calendar Q2 2013 the iPhone managed to leave the iPod behind. Moreover, it does not look like it is going to slow down its expansion.

As of June 30, 2013, cumulative sales of all iPhone smartphones totaled around 387.4 million units* with 31.2 million smartphones shipped in Q3 FY2013 alone. By contrast, life to date sales of iPod personal digital media player stood at 378.92 million units with only 4.56 million sold in the most recent quarter. In about three years after the introduction, Apple also managed to sell approximately 155 million iPad media tablets as of the most recent quarter.

While the iPods were extremely popular just four-five years ago, their quarterly sales never surpassed the 23 million units per quarter milestone, whereas considerably more universal iPhone has not been sold in quantities lower than 26 million units per quarter in the last couple of years. As a result, it is not surprising that the iPhone is now the most popular product that Apple has ever created. With over 35 million new smartphones sold quarterly on average, it will not take long before Apple sells over half of a billion of iPhones worldwide.

According to Apple, the iPhone 5 is the most popular smartphone it ever designed, based on demand in the first quarters of availability. While the company continues to sell iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S in developing countries, the iPhone 5 represents over 50% of smartphones it currently sells.

Apple did not make any official statements on the matter.
