AMD Athlon XP "Dublin" Details Transpired

Advanced Micro Devices is rumoured to have another 32-bit chip set to come next year for Socket 754 infrastructure, as an Internet web-site reported this weekend. The processor will be made using 0.13 micron technology, but will be aimed mostly at mobile market, it emerged.

Earlier this year we told you some details about AMD’s upcoming “Paris” and “Victoria” Socket 754 desktop CPUs both due to come next year. Reportedly, those microprocessors will not support AMD64 aka x86-64 extensions, even though they will be fully based on K8 micro-architecture, will have integrated PC3200 memory controller, SSE2 support, higher clock-speed and more advanced architecture. However, AMD Athlon XP “Paris” and “Victoria” processors will not be the only AMD’s K8 chips with deprived support for AMD64 instructions. The company will also launch its rather mysterious Athlon XP “Dublin” processor in mid-2004.

The Athlon XP based on Dublin core in Socket 754 package will have 256KB of L2 and will be made using 0.13 micron SOI technology. It is believed that AMD will provide samples of this CPU to its partners sometime in the first quarter next year; the production will begin in late-Q2 or early-Q3. The chip seems to be aimed at mobile market, since it sports PowerNow! technology. What is a bit strange, its power consumption, according to this web-site, will be up to 62W, too lot for a mobile processor, isn’t it? In this case we may assume that the processor is not really for mobile computers, but for cost-effective desktop replacement notebooks. 62W is still lower than today's Mobile Athlon 64 with 1MB L2 processors' 81W.

The AMD Athlon XP “Dublin” chips will emerge in 3000+ and 3200+ model numbers. Pricing in not known at the moment.
