Compal and Quanta, large notebook producers based in <%BANNER[article]%>Taiwan, released their laptop shipments estimates according to which these two companies are expected to produce over the half of mobile computers in the world in 2006. A Taiwanese publication also predicts that the country’s overall share in the notebook market will grow once again.

Quanta plans to ship 25 million notebooks in 2006, and Compal has set a goal of shipping 15 million units, according to The Taiwan Economic News web-site. It is estimated that global shipments of laptops will reach 75 million units in 2006. Quanta and Compal are estimated to have shipped 18 million and 10 million notebooks, respectively, in 2005. In total, about 60 millions of laptops were reportedly shipped globally last year.

While both have reportedly claimed they would see 30% year-on-year growth in shipments, Compal acknowledged it would only see small growth in revenues.

Analysts from Gartner predict that annual personal computer (PC) shipment growth will average 8% between 2006 and 2009, but revenues will remain flat, leaving many vendors to struggle for survival. Emerging market growth and mobile PC adoption will be the key unit growth drivers over the period, Gartner recently indicated.

Quanta and Compal are currently ranked as the world’s No.1 and No.2 notebook makers in the world. Their customers include such well-known suppliers as Acer, Dell, Hewlett Packard, Lenovo and Toshiba.

According to Market Intelligence Center (MIT) backed by the Taiwanese government the global market share of notebooks supplied by the Taiwanese companies was estimated to reach 82.4% in 2005, up from 72.3% in 2004. Furthermore, mainboards made by manufacturers based in Taiwan were expected to account for 98.3% of all supplies last year, up 1.8% annually.
