Acer Remains Optimistic About Notebook Market in 2009

The world’s third largest maker of personal computers, which has been heavily concentrating on sales of notebooks, Acer Group, said that it did not expect the market of mobile computers to decline next year despite global economic crisis. The claim is a bit surprising as sales of notebooks rely on both consumers and enterprises, which are cutting their expense at the moment.

 

According to JT Wang, the chairman of Acer Group, global notebook shipment in 2009 will remain on the same level compared to 2008. Mr. Wang said in an interview with Economy Daily News news-paper (excepts from which were published by DigiTimes web-site) that high-quality multimedia functionality and wireless networking will be basic standards of mainstream notebooks in the future, while Blu-ray support will mark the frontier between high-end laptops and mainstream computers.

According to analyst Tim Luke from Barclays Capital, total available market of microprocessors will grow by only 2% in 2009. Earlier the analyst predicted the 5% growth of the TAM, or even 6% growth, if Intel Atom processor for ultra low-cost personal computers (ULCPCs) is excluded from the consideration. Moreover, Mr. Luke predicted that the industry revenue will decline by 2% next year amid unit sales growth.
