Sony Electronics has officially released its first computer designed specifically for Internet browsing and other basic tasks. While the company avoids the term “netbook” for its new Vaio P-series machine, the system is indeed a netbook, just a premium-class stylish one, not another ultra low-cost personal computer for those on the go.

“The Vaio P-series Lifestyle PC is your portal to the world, delivering entertainment and computing in a head-turning device that's small enough to put in your pocket. Designed for the fashionista in all of us, it's the ideal companion,” said Mike Abary, senior vice president of Vaio product marketing at Sony Electronics.

Sony Vaio P is based on an unknown Intel processor clocked at 1.33GHz as well as Intel core-logic with integrated graphics. The machine sports 2GB DDR2 memory, 60GB hard disk drive (128GB SSD is an option), 802.11b/g/n wireless local network controller, Bluetooth model, built-in mobile broadband controller, integrated high-definition audio and so on. Sony Vaio P-series system features 8” screen with 1600x768 resolution and LED backlight. Sony pre-installs Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium or Vista Home Basic on the Vaio P-series systems.

The Vaio P “Lifestyle PC” weighs just 1.4 pounds measures by 10.99” x 0.93” x 7.87” (W x H x D). According to Sony, the system is capable of operating 4 hours on battery and higher-capacity battery can be purchased separately.

The unit is available in an array of eye-catching colors, including garnet red, emerald green, onyx black, crystal white and classic black. Matching carrying cases and Bluetooth color-coordinated mice are available to complete the look.

Engineered to provide the feel of a larger notebook, the Sony Vaio P-series provides a convenient typing experience by extending the keyboard to the perimeters of the chassis maximizing the typing area. The spacing between keys has also been engineered to help reduce typing mistakes.

By announcing its Vaio P-series mobile computers, Sony confirms importance of small form-factor affordable systems on today's market. Earlier the company called netbook market as a "race to bottom".

Sony Vaio P price begins at $899.
