Samsung Electronics, a leading semiconductor and consumer electronics producer, this week said that its flagship Galaxy S II smartphone (model: GT-I9100) has achieved 10 million global channel sales, doubling from five million in just eight weeks.
“Since its launch in late April 2011, the Galaxy S II has seen continued sales success, demonstrating Samsung’s industry-leading capabilities in - and commitment to - the smartphone market. In just five months the Galaxy S II has seen tremendous growth, reflecting its tremendous popularity with customers around the world, who in selecting the Galaxy S II as their device of choice have driven the device’s strong market position globally,” said JK Shin, president and head of Samsung's mobile communications business.
Samsung Galaxy S II is an Android 2.3-based smartphone that was announced by Samsung on February 13, 2011 at the Mobile World Congress. The Galaxy S II is Samsung’s flagship smartphone that is only 8.49mm thin. It features dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 system-on-chip as well as ARM Mali-400 graphics engine. The product sports 4.27" Super AMOLED+ screen with 800*480 resolution. The device became available worldwide starting from May 2011 and is sold by more than 140 vendors in 120 countries.
Samsung sells a number of different Galaxy S II versions, including a simplified Galaxy S II R, Galaxy S II LTE and plans to introduce Galaxy S II HD LTE with 4.65" display with 1280*720 screen resolution. The ten millionth milestone was achieved by the original model GT-I9100 that is based on dual-core 1.20GHz Exynos system-on-chip.
Even though the popularity of Galaxy S II is very high, it is still considerably lower compared to Apple's iPhone. It took Samsung roughly five months (from early May to late September) to sell ten million of units. Meanwhile, Apple sold 20.34 million of iPhones in one quarter that ended on June 25, 2011 (Q3 FY2011).
