Apple has sent various media outlets invitations to join its press conference on September 12, 2012. Stylization of the invitation rather clearly implies that the company intends to reveal its iPhone 5 next Wednesday.
The formal unveiling of the Apple iPhone 5 will take place in the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco, California on 10AM. The teaser invitation that Apple is spreading shows numbers "12" and "5", which is supposed to mean that the company plans to reveal its iPhone next at the press conference.
It is possible that apart from other things, Apple will also unwrap its new iPod portable digital media players, which are losing popularity, but appear to still be relevant gifts during holiday seasons, which is why Apple traditionally refreshes their family in September. What is unlikely is that Apple reveals smaller version of the iPad during the event, as the device is significant enough for a dedicated announcement.
In addition to the new iPhone, Apple also intends to disclose additional details and plans concerning its iOS 6 mobile operating system due this fall. As revealed earlier this year, iOS 6 will support a number of innovations from Apple, including new Maps application with real-time traffic information, but will lack certain popular features, such as YouTube app. The iOS 6 will support enhancements to Safari, such as iCloud tabs, offline reading lists, photo uploads and full screen view; will support FaceTime calls over cellular networks; will have option to decline incoming calls with a quick message, set a callback reminder and enable a new Do Not Disturb option; will get the ability to set up a VIP Mailbox, making it easier to quickly view messages from important people designated as VIPs; as well as will have other improvements.
Apple iPhone 5 is projected to be based on a new system-on-chip from Apple with better performance that the iPhone 4S. The device will also likely get 4G/LTE capabilities, improved camera, new docking connector and other advantages. The screen of Apple iPhone 5 will be "taller" compared to display of the iPhone 4/4S and will have 1136*640 resolution, according to market rumours, meaning that it will sustain "retina" quality with 326 pixels-per-inch pixel density. It is expected that the new iPhone will use thinner glasses from Corning, which will allow to make the new smartphone thinner overall.
