Dell, one of the world’s largest suppliers of personal computers, has no plans to develop its own-brand smartphone to complete its ecosystem of devices. The company hopes that Microsoft Corp.’s Windows 8 and Windows RT operating systems will help it to gain positions on the markets of media and business tablets as well as consumer notebooks. But smartphones and thus Windows Phone are not in Dell’s roadmap.
“We have been really clear about smartphones – we are not going to do smartphones. We are not going to be in the smartphone hardware business. We are going to provide smartphone solutions, we're going to be the preferred BYOD provider of solutions in the marketplace,” said Jeff Clarke, vice chairman and president of Dell's global operations and end user computing solutions at Dell, reports ComputerWorld UK web-site.
Nowadays, one good device, or even a number of good devices, is just not enough for success, companies have to offer competitive spectrums of products that work in collaboratively. That means, Dell and other hardware companies have to offer smartphones, tablets, laptops, hybrids, all-in-one PCs, desktops, workstations, servers and whatever other products there are.
Without a smartphone, Dell's portfolio of mobile products is just not complete, it cannot offer its business customers a vertically-integrated solution that could serve their mobile needs here and now.
“We will continue to take the assets that we have acquired over the past several years and build out a BYOD platform with Kace and Wyse and SonicWall and Quest technologies to be able to provide in the smartphone market answers for BYOD that will apply for our notebooks and tablets,” said Mr. Clarke.
It is interesting to note that rumours about Dell developing a smartphone have been spreading around for several years now. Dell also used to sell Android-based tablets.
