Following the release of cost-efficient Iconia B1 media tablet with 7”-class display early this year, Acer Group intends to offer aggressively-priced slates with 8”- and 10”-class screens later this year. Just like the first member of the cost-efficient tablets family, the larger slates will be based on application processors from MediaTek.
Tablet PC shipments are expected to reach more than 240 million units worldwide in 2013, according to NPD DisplaySearch market tracking firm. Media tablets with 7” - 8” screen sizes are expected to account for 45%, or 108 million units of the market in 2013, overtaking the 9.7” size which will account for 17% share or about 41 million units. The 10”-class tablets will account for around 28% of all media tablets due this year, DisplaySearch revealed recently.
In a bid to substantially increase shipments of its media tablets this year, Acer will reveal powerful slates with 8”- and 10”-class displays, said Linxian Lang, the president of Acer in Greater China, in an interview with the Commercial Times. The tablets will be based on quad-core system-on-chips from MediaTek.
Acer Iconia B1 officially costs $150 in the U.S. and the price could be lower on some markets, according to previous reports. With 8” and 10” slates, Acer plans to address $200 - $240 price-points.
With a media tablet lineup that will include 7”, 8” and 10” models that will cost $150, $200 and $240, respectively, Acer could pose a serious threat for products offered by Amazon, Google and a number of other companies, who can sell their Google Android-based slates at or even below manufacturing cost. What remains unclear is how competitive Acer’s tablets will be in terms of performance, capabilities, display resolution and so on.
