As Apple, Google and Samsung Electronics are only preparing their interactive smart wristwatches, Chinese company called Guoke is on the home stretch to release such a device powered by an open-source operating system this June, according to a media report. The smart-watch could be a huge breakthrough for the company.
Guoke, a subsidiary of China-based Shanda company, plans to sell a smart watch in June, reports Cnet News.com web-site. Nothing is known about the device, except the fact that it is going to come in two versions: one will be based on Google Android operating system and another one featuring Mozilla’s FireFox platform. Key capabilities of the smart-watch could be reading “e-books and other digital literature”, according to the source.
Given the fact that the Google Android is a relatively power hungry operating system, whereas the FireFox OS based on HTML5 is power hungry by definition, it is unclear for how long such interactive watches can live on battery. Moreover, being completely based on HTML5 technology, FF OS requires an Internet connection all the time, a hard thing to get for a tiny device.
Shanda Interactive Entertainment is a Chinese operator of online games and book publisher, according to Wikipedia. The company is clearly interested in popularization of video games and e-books. What is unclear is how the interactive watch, especially based on FireFox OS, can actually promote such products.
Interactive wrist-watches are supposed to be companions for smartphones and media tablets. It is logical to expect smart watch to feature media player controls, information updates, calendar, compass, reminders, NFC payment system and other functions that do not require a lot of screen real-estate.
Firefox OS smartphones are the first built entirely to open Web standards, enabling every feature to be developed as an HTML5 application. Web apps access every underlying capability of the device, bypassing the typical hindrances of HTML5 on mobile to deliver substantial performance. The platform’s flexibility allows carriers to easily tailor the interface and develop localized services that match the unique needs of their customer base.
