After Microsoft Corp. itself started to bundle free touch cover or type cover with its Surface RT 32GB media tablets, it was only a matter of time before partners of the company slash the price on the gadget. As it appears, a major U.S. retailer has decided to cut price of the Surface RT 32GB to $349, around $150 below the suggested retail pricing.

Starting Sunday, July 14th, Staples will sell Microsoft Surface RT 32GB for $349, reports Engadget web-site. The $150 price-cut is even more significant than a free touch cover or type cover (which cost $119) that Microsoft bundled with its Surface RT in June. Unfortunately, the campaign will only be valid from July 14 to July 20, 2013.

Although Microsoft Surface RT is probably the most successful product running Windows RT operating system, its sales are believed to be lower than those of Surface Pro tablet that is powered by Windows 8 OS.

Windows RT is a fully-fledged Microsoft operating system compatible with ARM-architecture application processors and incompatible with the vast majority of programs developed for Windows, something that clearly discourages anyone from using it. Given the fact that it carries Windows name, it confuses many buyers as people expect compatibility with their applications. Many PC makers, including Toshiba and Samsung, decided not to offer Windows RT-based devices early in the lifecycle of the OS so to avoid the misunderstandings. Microsoft is currently working hard to improve software support for the Windows RT platform.

Since Windows RT platform has not got really popular among end-users, manufacturers who actually started to use it for their products now have to either discontinue them or sell at substantial discounts. Microsoft may be testing how flexible the demand towards Surface RT is and whether low demand can be cured with low prices in the future.

Microsoft Surface with Windows RT operating system features 10.6" screen with 1366*768 resolution. The media tablets are based on Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core system-on-chip with advanced graphics adapter and are equipped with 2GB of RAM, 32GB/64GB NAND flash storage, two 720p HD cameras, stereo speakers and two microphones, will feature ambient light sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope and compass. The slates come with 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 wireless connectivity and feature full-size USB 2.0, microSDXC card slot, headset jack, HD video out port and cover port. Microsoft includes Office Home and Student 2013 RT Preview (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote), Windows Mail and Windows Messaging, SkyDrive, Windows Internet Explorer 10, Bing, Xbox Music, Xbox Video, and Xbox Games apps.
