Intel Unleashes New Silvermont-Based Processors for Tablets, Hybrids, Low-Cost PCs

Intel Reveals Atom, Celeron and Pentium Chips Based on Silvermont Micro-Architecture

Intel Corp. on Wednesday revealed one of its most anticipated products lineup this year: a family of low-power/low-cost system-on-chips aiming tablets, 2-in-1 devices, all-in-one PCs, laptops and desktops. The new SoCs that belong to Bay Trail family of platforms are based on Silvermont micro-architecture and promise to significantly improve performance and multimedia capabilities of various devices.

Bay Trail Detailed

Intel introduced Atom Z3000-series system-on-chip (Bay Trail-T platform, 3W TDP) for tablets and hybrid PCs as well as Celeron and Pentium processors (Bay Trail-M [4W – 6.5W TDP] and Bay Trail-D [12W TDP] platforms) for notebooks, netbooks, all-in-one PCs and low-power desktops. The new chips feature one, two or four x86 cores, single-channel DDR3 memory, seventh-generation Intel integrated graphics engine with advanced accelerated video encoding/decoding capabilites and a host of other technologies.

The family of "Bay Trail" SoCs provides a wide range of options for Intel's customers by enabling one hardware configuration that supports both Microsoft Windows 8 and Google Android operating systems, ultimately offering people broader choice of form factors at a range of price points that meet the varied needs of consumers and business users.

The Intel Atom Z3000 processor series feature Burst Technology 2.0 with four cores, four threads and 2MB L2 cache. This performance allows users to multi-task, consume and create content on various devices. People will also have a choice of form-factors between tablets and 2—in-1s, with thin-and-light devices ranging from 8mm to 1 pound, and screen sizes ranging from 7”-11.6”. Tablets based on this latest Intel Atom SoC will be available at prices starting as low as $199. The Intel Atom Z3000 series also enables business-ready tablets that deliver the experiences and designs people want with the protection for the enterprise that IT requires.

Silvermont: Next-Generation Microarchitecture

Silvermont will serve as the foundation for a breadth of 22nm products expected in market later this year. The performance-per-watt improvements with the new microarchitecture will enable a significant difference in performance and responsiveness for the compute devices built around these products. Intel's Silvermont microarchitecture was designed and co-optimized with Intel's 22nm SoC process with tri-gate transistors. By taking advantage of this industry-leading technology, Intel is able to provide a significant performance increase and improved energy efficiency.

Highlights of the Silvermont microarchitecture include:

A wave of highly powerful and energy efficient tablets, 2-in-1s and other mobile devices based on the new Atom, Celeron and Pentium processors are due to market for consumers and business users in the fourth quarter of this year from leading OEMs including Aava, Acer, Asus, Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba.
