Microsoft Introduces Second-Generation Surface Slates

Microsoft Corp. has Monday announced second generation Surface media and business tablets. Two new Surface models – Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 – along with an expanded portfolio of new Surface accessories, will be available at Microsoft retail stores, and select third-party retailers and commercial resellers in 22 initial markets. The new slates feature improved performance, better operating systems and longer battery life.

 

Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 each benefit from significant updates, including improvements to processing power (thanks to new Intel Core i5-4200U “Haswell” microprocessor and Nvidia Tegra 4), battery life, high-res displays and, improved cameras and so on. Enhancements in Windows RT 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro make Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 more powerful and customizable than the predecessors. Full specifications of the new tablets are listed below.

Both Surface 2 models feature a sturdy new kickstand design with two positions, making Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 more comfortable to use on a lap or at a desk. With Type Cover 2, the next-generation click-in keyboard for Surface, classic is now colorful with options of magenta, cyan, purple and black. The keyboard is backlit so one can work and play in any lighting condition with the same super-thin, lightweight design of the original Type Cover.

Microsoft Surface 2 features a silver magnesium body and is available in 32GB and 64GB configurations. Starting at US$499, Surface 2 will be available on October 22, 2013. The Surface Pro 2 is available in 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB (where available) versions, with either 4GB or 8GB of DDR3 RAM. The new business slate will start at $899.

Second-generation Microsoft Surface tablets will be available on multiple markets, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States on October 22 and in China in early November. Additional markets will be announced in the coming months.

In addition to second-gen Microsoft Surface slates, the software giant has also introduced a number of accessories for its tablets, including The new click-in Power Cover keyboard with integrated battery, a docking station for Surface Pro, Bluetooth wireless adapter for typing covers, new Arc Touch mouse, car charger and so on.
