Since Apple’s iPhone 5c failed to become truly affordable and ended up being only $100 cheaper than all-new iPhone 5s, the latter has easily become more popular than the former. According to a survey, iPhone 5s outsells iPhone 5c by more than two to one. As a consequence, Apple is reducing orders on the inexpensive handset, but is likely to ask its manufacturing partners to boost output of the fully-fledged new-generation smartphone.
During the last days of September market researcher Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) surveyed consumers who purchased Apple’s latest iPhones only to find out that the iPhone 5s accounted for 64% of total iPhone sales following its launch that month. Meanwhile, the iPhone 5c accounted for 27%, while the legacy iPhone 4s made up the remaining 9%. As a result, the 5s not only outsells the 5c, but it is outselling it more than two to one, reports AllThingsD. At the same time, an alarming thing is that the iPhone 5s is less successful at launch than the original iPhone a year ago.
“The relative performance of all three iPhones is generally in line with the performance of the similarly priced phones following the launch of the iPhone 5 in 2012. Over time, the lower-priced phones have tended to gain share versus the flagship phone, after the initial rush of dedicated upgraders to the newest device. So we expect that the 5c will account for a higher percent of total U.S. iPhone sales in the coming months, but the design changes may alter that dynamic. The iPhone 5c may appeal to different buyers than the legacy 4S did last year, or the new 5s will this year,” said Josh Lowitz, a CIRP co-founder.
While it is hard to predict the eventual success of Apple iPhone 5c, it looks like it has not really met Apple’s own expectations. Meanwhile, iPhone 5s is exceeding Apple’s expectations. At present, it is easy to buy a 5c on Apple’s online store in the U.S. and receive it in the 24 hours. By contrast, deliver times for the more expensive 5s are two to three weeks.
Given the current situation, Apple has reduced orders of the iPhone 5c to Pegatron and Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) this quarter, according to sources of the Wall Street Journal. At the same time, Apple has increased this quarter's orders for the iPhone 5s, said two executives at Foxconn.
Apple sold nine million new-generation iPhone in the first weekend of sales. The company has never provided a split between 5c and 5s sales.
