The implementation of 3D on mobile devices is still in its infancy and requires a much more advanced technical solution for both viewing 3D and capturing 3D. Nonetheless, as the demand towards high-performance mobile devices rises, the total available market of mobile devices with stereo-3D (S3D) screens will surpass 148 million units in 2015, according to analysts.

As stereoscopic 3D screens become easier and cheaper in manufacturing as well as because the processing solutions are already on a roadmap that will support the increasing demands of 3D, the total available market for S3D devices will be larger than expected. New research from In-Stat forecasts that the total number of stereo-3D mobile devices will surpass 148 million units in 2015. Previously In-Stat predicted that shipments of S3D will surpass 60 million units in 2014.

“Although 3D has been around for decades, the current technology is new and advanced. And, as with any new technology, adoption will increase as the ecosystem matures, costs come down, and the ability to capture 3D is combined with innovative mobile applications, which is likely to be in the 2013 to 2015 timeframe," said Jim McGregor, chief technology strategist at In-Stat.

The analysts from In-Stat believe that nearly 30% of all handheld game consoles will be stereo-3D by 2015, whereas 70% will still remain traditional 2D. By 2014, 18% of all tablets will feature stereoscopic 3D displays. In 2012, notebook PCs will be the first 3D enabled mobile device to reach 1 million units.

LMAO! This will make the most modern tablet PCs like iPad2 look so primitive. The hand held devices will be as powerful as the modern gaming netbooks and when you look at it, it will feel like you could put your hand into the screen. A 3D theatre in your hand.
