Hitachi Displays this week quietly introduced a 4.5" display for mobile devices that supports 720p (1280*720) resolution amid 329ppi pixel density that approaches the limits of the human eye and which Apple calls Retina screen on its iPhone 4. The new screen will power next-generation smartphones and/or other devices with high-definition displays and with more powerful multimedia capabilities.

The Hitachi 720p 4.5" in-plane switching (IPS) display uses a number of newly developed technologies for high aperture ratio pixels and improved backlight efficiency in LCD displays to prevent the reduced brightness that occurs when designing high-definition displays with superior color reproduction. The panel itself is based on amorphous silicon, whereas earlier high-resolution small displays were based on polycrystalline silicon TFTs that are more expensive and which are harder to produce.
 

Thanks to 329 pixel per inch (ppi) density (0.0257*0.0771mm pixel pitch), the quality of the displayed images will be even a little bit higher than that on the Apple iPhone 4, which has a 3.5" screen with 960*640 resolution with 326ppi density. It is unknown whether the new 4.5" LCD from Hitachi will power a next-generation iPhone, but it is clearly a possibility provided that Hitachi can make a lot of such screens on its production capacities.

The Hitachi 720p 4.5" IPS LCD display has 16:9 aspect ratio, 55.51mm x 98.69mm display area, 160° viewing angle horizontally and vertically, 500cd/m2 brightness and 1000:1 contrast ratio.

The new HD LCD for smartphones will be exhibited at FPD International 2011 that will be held at the Pacifico Yokohama from October 26 to 28, 2011.

In other words, the technology to build a 27" WHUXGA monitor is here (7680x4320 resolution). I wonder, how is the image compared to a standard HD display at the same size, viewed from 1 meter away?

Do you know anyone who holds their phone 6 inches away from their eyes? That's how close you'd need to be for a human eye to make out the detail. I don't even think I can focus that close. At 18 inches 150 dpi is plenty.
