Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., a subsidiary of Sony Corp., announced late on Monday that it would launch its highly-anticipated PlayStation 3 game console in mid-November. The company plans to deliver up to 4 million new-generation consoles already this year, but the game machines will not be very affordable: $499 - $599, depending on the model.
The PlayStation 3 will be launched on 11th of November in Japan and on the 17th of November in Australia, Europe, U.S. and other regions. There will be two versions of the console available, one is equipped with 20GB hard disk drive – it will have recommended price of $499 (ˆ499), another features 60GB hard drive – it will be offered for $599 (ˆ), which makes the PlayStation 3 the world’s most expensive game console. Even the premium version of the Xbox 360 has recommended price of $399.

Even though the PlayStation 3 will be a year late compared to Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Sony’s executives have said that the part would be more technologically advanced. Apparently, technological leadership comes not only because of Blu-ray optical drive, but also because a new wireless controller. Ken Kutaragi, head of the PlayStation division, showed off a new wireless game controller that will come with every PS3. Using the new controller, players will be able to interact with a game simply by moving the handset around, the Financial Times reported.

Sony also pledged to have 2 million PlayStation 3 consoles available during the launch window, according to a report from PC World. Sony plans to ship 4 million PS3s worldwide by the end of 2006, and 6 million by March 2007.
A recent research showed that the PlayStation 3 console will cost about $900 to build, which means that even at a rather extreme price of about $600 per unit, Sony will continue to lose money on every gaming machine it sells. According to Merrill Lynch research company, the most expensive component of the PlayStation 3 will be its Blu-ray disk drive, which will initially cost $350. The second most expensive part of the gaming machine will be the Cell processor which will cost Sony “at least” $230 per unit to make. Nvidia’s RSX graphics processor will cost $70, while for 256MB of XDR memory as well as 256MB of GDDR3 memory Sony will have to pay $50, believes Merrily Lynch.
In three years time after launch the cost of manufacturing the PS3 can reach $320, believes the research firm. Merrill Lynch notes that the price of two most expensive components – the Cell processor and the Blu-ray optical drive – can tumble significantly already in 2007 when the microprocessor is shifted to 65nm production technology, while the Blu-ray drives reaches high-volume manufacturing.

Also, is that the new controller? Weren't the PS3 controllers those boomerang like things... that controller picture looks very similar to the Dual-Shock 2 used in the PS2 now, aside from the little USB connector at the edge.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but here in Belgium, @ the launch of the PS2, the damn thing cost 500€, which is even more than 600$...
This won't persuade me to not buy the PS3 :)

Even if the PS3 costed $1000 most would still buy it. To pay only $499 to play one of the most advanced home consoles isn't really that bad. Especially, with the prices of video cards these days...PS3 is a damn bargain. To play oblivion you gotta pay damn near $1200 in video cards to play the game the way the makers intended it to. Computer gaming is getting to become extremely too damn expensive and this ain't gonna hurt to many folks.

Actually, back in the bad old days, the old saying was the computer you want will always cost $5000. Considering this was many years ago, factoring inflation into the equation would make it much higher. Computers are cheap these days, even kiddie computers.
I'm not saying you're making an invalid point though, since a PC maker sells a machine to make money and Sony is quite willing to lose money on the machine, so clearly there is something to be said for the price of this machine. But, then again, who needs a Blu-Ray unit these days? Is this even going to be the standard?
I think it's almost comical how "gamers" keep up their idiotic pursuit of ever more powerful components to an extent that the machines are ridiculously power hungry and noisy to achieve an end that is of dubious value. Pac-Man was way more popular than any of these lousy games they make today, with very crude sound and video (although I never liked it). I think from this it is easy to conclude that the idea behind the game, and the design is way more important than stupid crap like a few extra polygons or whatever the Hell these idiots keep trying to get more of. Visuals get boring fast if the game play sucks, and a good video card isn't going to improve the ideas behind the game at all. Attempting to make things realistic forgets one of the reasons games exists; reality is overrated and we play games to escape from it, at least sometimes.
From what I've been reading, Nintendo is taking this tact. They are not so concerned about the visuals as Sony and Microsoft, but to the actual gameplay. It's a good idea, which anyone who has spent several hours playing Defender in an arcade can tell you, despite its crude graphics. Life just didn't get any better than that, unless there was a pretty girl watching your unparalleled skill (an altogether too infrequent event, as I remember it) that you knew would go out with you if you could just get the high score (an even less frequent event, since I would always choke when a pretty girl happened by and watched).
