The success of Halo 3 game helped Microsoft Corp. to sell considerably more Xbox 360 game consoles in October than it sells normally, however, Nintendo Wii got back to position of the most popular game machine in the USA, according to NPD Group, a leading market tracking firm.
Microsoft Xbox 360 game console was sold in 366 thousand units quantity in October, whereas about 519 thousand of gamers preferred Nintendo Wii game console. Price-cut to $499 that occurred in the second half of the month did not help Sony to boost sales of the PlayStation 3 compared to the previous month: only about 121 thousand were sold through, less than two thousand compared to the previous month. Sales of Sony PlayStation 2 continued to decline. In fact, combined sales of both PS2 and PS3 in the U.S. were lower than sales of the Xbox 360 alone, according to figures released by NPD.
On the whole, the unit market of non-portable game consoles was down 13% sequentially in October with only Nintendo Wii enjoying considerably unit sales increase. Sony PlayStation 3 gained slightly, whereas Microsoft Xbox 360 sold in considerably less compared to the previous month.

Nintendo sustains its leadership in the market of portable game consoles with 458 thousand of Nintendo DS sold through, whereas sales of Sony PlayStation Portable remained flat with 286 thousand of devices acquired by end-users. It is interesting to note that thanks to availability of PSP slim, Sony managed to ship the same amount of its portable game devices compared to the previous month, whereas Nintendo DS dropped. Shipments figures for Game Boy Advance were not available.

Strong sales of Nintendo Wii once again proof overall popularity of the game console, whereas relatively good acceptance of Microsoft Xbox 360 emphasizes the success of Halo 3 game. Meanwhile, flat sales of Sony PlayStation 3 despite of price-cut seem disappointing. On the other hand, availability of $399 model starting from the 2nd November may actually revive sales of Sony’s latest game machines.

Why did you miss off the PSP sales? Its a console. In total Sony sold around 2m consoles last month worldwide which is around 4 times as many as Microsoft did.
In worldwide gaming Microsoft are nothing compared to Nintendo and Sony.

Cool!! and this is why Sony is helping to slow down the sale of it's Flagship system.
On two fronts in that matter.
1. The consumer gets to choose between an Expensive cool PS3 or a less Expensive and this less cool PS2 and PS1.
Since the Cool PS3 is unforgiving towards those with a strapped Budget the poor PS fanboy will choose the less Cooler yet affordable PS system and will also not take the extra effort to safe money to buy the cooler system since he/she has a choice.
2. The huge sales of the old systems as you stated will naturally not go unnoticed to the software developer and will put his recources in creating more PS2 and maybe PS1 games since creating games for the old system is far cheaper and bound to make more profit due to it's bigger installer base than the More Cooler but Program unfriendly PS3.
And as a rule of thumb. The more software for the system ( Especially new released Software ). the more the system sells.
And eventhough The PS1 and PS2 sales are Incredible. the profit Margin is so Mediocre, Sony is still not able to even reach a Breakeven ( Income equals loss = 0 profit ) because manufacturing PS3 especially after the price cuts Sony still loses $.
Yeay Sony sells alot of PS1 too but this also helps kill the PS3 which sony needs to get profit.
Sorry to burst your bubble dude.

I knew the xbox sale spike is only temporary due to Halo 3 release.
Proves again that Software sells consoles and not the amount of FLOATING POINT CALCULATIONS the system can achive in a lab.
This is the one lesson people seem to forget over and over again.
PS3 seems to be doing pretty bad despite the price cut. Because it also lacks decent software.
Rumor has it that PS3 sells wel in Europe because it's being bought more of it's Blue Ray playing ability ( The Cheapest Blue Ray player on the market ) and less of it being able to play games.
