AMD Xilleon Based Televisions, Set-Top-Boxes to Display DivX-Encoded Movies.

Advanced Micro Devices, a leading maker of various chips, and DivX, a digital media company, said on Wednesday that they had signed an agreement under which certain AMD Xilleon digital media processors will support DivX-encoded content. The pact will ensure that DivX content is supported by a wider amount of devices and will allow AMD to sell its Xilleon processors to more clients.

“We are committed to delivering a true multimedia experience with AMD Xilleon processors providing excellent visual quality and interoperability across a number of high-definition digital TVs and platforms. DivX video is a highly attractive feature that we believe complements AMD technology to offer real value to our DTV OEM customers and consumers,” said Dave Di Orio, corporate vice president and general manager for AMD’s DTV Division.

The two companies will work together to achieve DivX Certification for specific AMD Xilleon processors. As a result, AMD will be able to sell AMD Xilleon processors to manufacturers of set-top-boxes and TV-sets that are capable of DivX-encoded content playback, which will allow AMD and DivX to target broader range of devices.

The DivX and its brother XviD formats are used to distribute copyright protection-free movies typically by the Internet and usually without content producer approval. Both codecs are based on MPEG 4 ASP and offer balance between video quality and file size. To date, over 120 million DivX Certified products have been shipped into the market.
