Howard Stringer, chief executive officer of Sony Corp., said in an interview that Nintendo Wii video game console, which is the most successful system in this generation, is not a rival for Sony’s PlayStation 3 since it is less technically advanced.
“I’ve played a Nintendo Wii. I don’t see it as a competitor. It’s more of an expensive niche game device. We’re selling a lot of PlayStation 3s now and it’s still the best way to buy a Blu-ray player,” Howard Stringer said last week at the Allen & Co. media conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, reports Bloomberg.
It is indisputable fact that Sony PlayStation 3 is much more powerful compared to Nintendo Wii, however, it is much more expensive and customers may not necessarily need exceptional performance to enjoy video games. Moreover, Nintendo Wii features motion-sensing game controller that allows to play sports games, something which is absent from the list of PS3 titles.
Sony PlayStation 3 can also playback DVD and Blu-ray movies, but many people are not interested in watching movies using their game consoles, which is why the capability does not immediately transform PS3 into success.
So far Nintendo has sold about 28 million Wii game consoles, Microsoft sold roughly 20 million Xbox 360 systems and Sony sold about 14 million PlayStation 3 machines, according to some estimates.

This guy needs a 12-step program in a bad way. The first step is to admit you have a problem ( selling PS3's ). Get out of denial Sony executives.
Blu-Ray will go down in history like the old Laser Disk. Just look at X-Bit's recent poll. In fact, X-Bit ran the poll a second time because the results for Blu-Ray were so poor.

Of course they don't see it as a competitor. They figure that people who are going to buy fun games for the Wii wouldn't buy their games for their overpriced counsel. I think that saying "It’s more of an expensive niche game device." is really something that applies to the PS3.

I somewhat agree with Sony, but not to the extent they are taking it. The Wii is a VERY SUCCESSFUL and DAMN FUN console...But with the way Sony talks about it is pitiful..
It would be better off if they just stated "The Wii is indeed a great console, but it leaves a lack in terms of what capabilities it has compared to our console. It is a known fact that there will be games you simply just can't get for the Wii...The s blockbuster titles like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, and other top tier games. The Wii is indeed a successful console, but in a different category compared to the PS3."
If they went more a long the lines of that, it wouldn't be as bad as shooting themselves in the foot as they have. But just before someone jumps the gun and points it out, yes nintendo does have Final Fantasy titles =P...But nothing recent besides crystal chronicles, which is a VAST difference from the playstation related FF series titles in many aspects.

I agree with him. PS3 competition is the 360. They have similar games, spec, and features. wii's games are much simpler. I got a PS3 and am getting a wii in the future, because it has difference features.

well Wii is more lyk a competitor to PS2 rather than PS3 cuz da games themselves tell us dat there is no direct competition bw Wii and PS3... but if Xbox360 was involved den id say its a competitor cuz dey have similar games.... and even the audience for both the consoles r different....
