Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. is projected to make a significant announcement regarding the PlayStation 3 video game console this week. There is no concrete information, only rumours, but considering the fact that the PS3 is the worst selling new-generation video game system, the statement from Sony is likely to be important enough to either drive sales or make it clear for the community that PS3 will get much more popular.

Several analysts earlier this year said that Sony is planning to reduce pricing of the PlayStation 3 video game system in April and many observers now believe that the price-cut is nearing and Sony’s announcement will be built around the price reduction. Others claim that the announcement will involve either revelation of release dates of new exclusive titles, or availability of certain exclusive online content. There are even claims that Sony is preparing to drop the PlayStation 2 price to $99, but this contradicts the fact that this will be a PS3-related announcement.

Theoretically, Sony could launch a new version of the PlayStation 3 with reduced pricing, power consumption and smaller form-factor, which would be just in time considering the current economic environment. Besides, Sony might launch a motion-sensing game controller, akin to Nintendo Wiimote, as well as a service with many casual games. In addition, a video content deliver service is definitely in Sony’s interests. However, if something of the aforementioned was in preparation for a launch, many leaks would have emerged by now.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. did not comment on the news-story.

Or perhaps Sony wears its butthole as a collar and will drop the PS2 price, thereby fueling demand for an irrelevant technology while Blu Ray dies and the XBox solidifies its position as the HD console of choice.

PS3: not brought to you by the same people that never actually brought you minidisc or betamax.

PS3 and X-BOX distroyed the PC gamming. I'm guessing that the new PS4 and X-BOX 2 will be the final nail in the PC Gaming's coffin...

PC gaming will not die in the foreseeable future

An option for Sony to make the PS3 more affordable would be to replace the blooooray drive with a standard DVD drive

Remember you heard it here first

There's one small problem with that theory. All PlayStation 3 games are on BLU RAY dics!

There's absolutely no way they can get rid of the blu ray player to make the playstation 3 cheaper.
