Even though Blu-ray has clearly win the battle against HD DVD in Asia, Europe and the U.S., the CBHD standard – which is based on HD DVD technology – is winning the game against Blu-ray in China.

According to a media report from Morning Satellite, movies on CBHD format command 3% of the Chinese market, which is claimed to be well ahead of Blu-ray disc. Considering the fact that China is the country with the world’s greatest population and potential of the market, Sony and other Blu-ray patent holders should consider it very seriously.

The high-definition video format called China Blue High-Definition Disc (CBHD), which is based on HD DVD technology, is not expected to spur another format war, despite of support by local video player hardware makers.

Currently CBHD is supported by Shinco, TCL and Tsinghua Tongfang, which are based in China. Nevertheless, Taiwan-based makers of optical disc drives (ODDs) and players are unwilling to support to the format, as they do not consider it to be a rival for the Blu-ray disc, which has won its battle with Toshiba’s HD DVD. Taiwanese optical drive and players manufacturers believe that there will be little international content support for CBHD, thus, the market for CBHD should be limited. Despite of this fact, CBHD is outselling BD in China.
