Samsung Electronics, a leading producer of consumer electronics products, has announced that certain of its Blu-ray will gain access to YouTube service. While a firmware update to a BD Live-enabled player can hardly be interesting for anyone who does not own it, there are reports that YouTube is negotiating with movie studios regarding video rentals via its channels.
“The addition of YouTube underscores Samsung’s strong commitment to meeting consumers’ rapidly evolving desire to enjoy a vast array of multimedia content at home,” a statement by Samsung reads.
Owners of the BD-P1600, BD-P3600 or BD-P4600 Blu-ray players will be able to watch user-generated content on YouTube by uploading the value-added service at no additional cost. At this point Samsung does not promise any video-on-demand or rental technologies, but it is unlikely that the company would implement support for user-generated content onto its premium players. It is more probable that Samsung decided to support YouTube in anticipation of high-quality content availability on the Internet video channel.
