Nintendo of America said that 80% of female gamers in the U.S. prefer Wii game console over other video game systems. The company claims that this is a result of purposeful effort to enlarge the video game market.

“This didn't happen by accident. It's the result of a deliberate attempt to expand the market,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, at an event of BMO Capital Markets, reports Kotaku web-site.

According to Mr. Fils-Aime, 80% of female gamers prefer, Nintendo Wii, 11% choose Microsoft Xbox 360 and 9% favor Sony PlayStation 3. The data is based on data obtained by Nintendo of America itself, hence, it should be taken with a grain of salt. Still, it is rather likely that simplistic casual games appeal to women more than high-end shooters or role-playing games on PS3 or X360.

What should be kept in mind is that there are 33.3 million male gamers and 11.7 million female gamers in the U.S., according to Nintendo. Even though the amount of women playing video games is by far lower than the amount of men who play console games, the number of female gamers is very significant.

So, is this released statistic supposed to increase sales or something? Look at the bigger picture to their own admittance: 45 million gamers in the world and less than 25% of them like the Wii. That's almost as low as former President George W. Bush's approval rating!

How do you like them apples, Nintendo?

I'm pretty sure Nintendo is absolutely ecstatic about "them apples" given their significantly outselling the 360/PS3.

If you get sales like that by having a low approval rating I can't even begin to imagine what you expect they'd sell if there were popular
