Sony Computer Entertainment claims that its fourth generation PlayStation system will be revealed later than its potential competitors: the third-generation Xbox and the next-gen console from Nintendo. Potentially, this will allow Microsoft and Nintendo to see increase in their hardware sales and offer something that PlayStation 3 will not be able to. But Sony will have time to add even more features to the PS4.

“Looking from the outside, it was Microsoft that released the first of this generation of consoles. Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move. Or, because Nintendo’s approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware – Wii doesn’t even support HD resolution – so they might be the first to move,” said Shuhei Yoshida, the head of Sony Worldwide Studios, in an interview with Develop web-site.

Thanks to head-start with Xbox 360 in 2005, a year ahead of PS3 and Wii, Microsoft managed to force Sony to answer its console with own competing offerings. The ramifications for Sony were pretty clear: instead of focusing on development of technologies that were meant to be a part of the PS3 from the start, the company had to follow Microsoft and then Nintendo. Although Sony does support Blu-ray playback, which is its indisputable advantage, not a lot of hardcore gamers wanted to watch movies on their consoles. As a consequence, Xbox 360 and Wii set the trends that PlayStation 3 had to follow. Considering these facts, it is rather strange to learn that even Sony itself does not expect the next-gen PlayStation to be on the market on time with its competitors.

But development of the PlayStation 4 may be a challenge for Sony. The company reportedly looked at Larrabee graphics processor for the PS4, but the former was cancelled in late 2009. The Cell processor architecture is no longer developed and will hardly evolve. Considering the fact that Sony should at least try to maintain compatibility between PS3 games and PlayStation 4 game console, the company will have to redesign the Cell processor by itself considerably to simplify software development and ask Nvidia to design a new graphics processor. However, there are possibilities that Sony will still utilize a new CPU architecture and ask a different partner to design a new graphics chip.

Thanks to addendum of Sony Move motion-sensing controller, stereo-3D support for movies and games as well as some other advantages, the PlayStation 3 may stay relevant for a longer period than Microsoft Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii. In fact, this is the only thing that Sony presently puts its bets on.

“Probably the watch should be on these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan,” said Mr. Yoshida.

Consoles = less upgrades, less $$ spend in the long run for the end users

lies. If you spent as much as you did on a PS3 or xbox 360 the day they were lunched and never upgraded since, you would STILL have a significantly better gaming systems.

For example, the PS3 was lunched mere days after the 8800GTX GPUs. An 8800GTX provides better graphics than any console even today, and will play ANY PC game currently on the market. You might have to somewhat lower settings, but it will still be higher quality settings than a console.

And if you didn't buy your GPU at the day the consoles lunched? well, PCs kept improving and consoles stagnated. So you can easily buy a super cheap GPU today for a fraction of the cost of any console and get superior video quality then any console on the market.

consoles are for people who just want to play "out-of-the-box". People who care less about installation, hardware upgrades and new driver/software updates. so frequent platform upgrades or updates are irrelevant.

and wow do you really eat your GPUs?!?

launch - v.: referring to "first time release"; or to propel with force.

Playstation 4 would be great, remember how PS2 was a million times better tnan PS1? , PS4 might perhaps bring even more graphics detail, speed, effects and realism versus the already breath taking PS3 which seems to have done it for all times with no console matching it. I'd like to see big specs, big numbers, advanced architectures for PS4, who knows, Sony rocks!

Sony continues to shoot themselves in the foot! May the best system win but MAN... to declare that they are planing on releasing next gen LAST. That's dumbfounding.

I'm not expecting much from Nintendo. It will probably just be a Wii++, HD resolution, better controller.

Microsoft will likely release something spectacular. Letting them (almost daring them) to release first, is committing suicide. Even if the PS4 is 1.5x better it will sell short because everyone will already own an Xbox.

Sony's leadership should all be fired. 10 years ago they were number 1 in consumer home entertainment. They are getting their pants beat off in televisions, home theater, gaming, camera's.. pretty much everything.

Not so long ago people would say WOW! that's a sony... now it's... hmmm.. must have been on sale.

I'm really looking forward to the next gen Nintendo console. Nintendo has really done a good job innovating. The Wii controller, the dual screens and touch screen on the DS, the 3D screen on the 3DS.
