Microsoft Corp. formed its Microsoft Game Studios publisher back in 2002, about the same time it released its Xbox game console, in order to provide exclusive content for the new video game system. It looks like months before the launch of Windows Phone 7 operating system the company is preparing to set up Games Studios Mobile Gaming.

“Microsoft Games Studios Mobile Gaming will support first party development and evangelise mobile gaming across MGS. The Mobile Gaming studio will be the hub for MGS franchises and titles on mobile devices and a center of excellence for mobile games," a Microsoft job posting reports, reports Edge Magazine.

The company's own web-site also lists a number of positions at Games Studios Mobile Gaming, including 3D artists, artists, producers, designers, managers, etc.

Setting up a special division to develop games for mobile devices means that Microsoft considers games for handhelds a very significant business opportunity. Keeping in mind the popularity of various gaming applications for platforms like Apple iPhone or Google Android, specifically-developed programs by Microsoft for Windows Phone 7-based devices is likely to give a significant boost to the forthcoming mobile OS.

It remains to be seen whether Microsoft Games Studios Mobile will focus on creation of games for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 and Zune HD platforms or there is also a specific mobile gaming platform akin to Nintendo DS or Sony PlayStation Portable, incoming from the world's largest software maker.

Microsoft did not comment on the news-story.
