HP this week demonstrated for the first time its Zeen slate-type device that will be bundled with its future printers and will allow to easily control them. The product features HP's own TouchSmart interface, but does not support a number of crucial features that would allow to use it separately from printer.
The Zeen tablet PC from HP features 7" display and some kind of ARM-based system-on-chip inside. The product does not support Gmail, multimedia playback and, perhaps, some other functions that could let end-users to utilize the device as a standalone slate-type personal computer, reports DigiTimes web-site. The most weird thing about HP Zeen is that it reportedly still runs Google Android, the operating system HP decided to drop after acquisition of Palm.
Based on the photograph of the device, it should be pretty comfortable and easy to control the work of a printer using graphics interface. Considering the fact that copy or scan jobs can get pretty complex, convenient touch-based graphics interface can be a pretty useful thing. Still, it is definitely not a market changer: proper software bundled with printers allows to tailor almost any work. Moreover, without ability to access Gmail directly from the pad, it will be impossible to print-out needed emails.
