Sony Computer Entertainment may finally unveil its highly-discussed PlayStation Portable 2 video game console at an event in late January, 2011. The announce will most likely be formal and may be a press conference behind closed doors, so, it is not certain that Sony will go public with the PSP2 just then.

The Sony PlayStation Portable 2 may be revealed on the 27th of January, 2011, a report at MCV web-site claims. From the news-story it is unclear whether Sony intends to officially unveil the new product to the world while simultaneously carrying out a press conference for journalists, or whether the company plans to show the PSP 2 behind closed doors to journalists. Several web-sites have confirmed that they were invited to a Sony event.

According to the source, publishers were informed late last year of the "plans". As reported before, at least a number of game designers had also received PSP2 software development kits from Sony.

Late last year Kazuo Hirai, the head of Sony Computer Entertainment, expressed interest in touch-screen technology, which naturally inspired talks that the company may implement a touch-sensitive screen in the PSP2.

The only official information about the PSP2 is that it is in development and that some game developers already have prototypes. The PlayStation Portable 2 – or whatever its actual name is – is expected to be based on the Cell processors with four synergistic processing elements (SPEs), according to a report earlier this year. Back in late 2008 rumours transpired that Sony had licensed PowerVR graphics processor technologies for the next-gen PSP. According to other market rumours, PSP2 has two cameras, one forward and one backward facing, in addition, it has a touch-screen in addition to physical PlayStation buttons. Finally, according to the unofficial information, the device sports both 3G/3.5G and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Sony did not comment on the news-story.
