Microsoft Corp.'s official Xbox magazine (OXM) on Monday published an article about hypothetical next-generation Xbox 360. Among other industrial experts, Neal Robison, the head of software developers relations at AMD said that he would expect the future Xbox games to have Avatar-like graphics, that it would also continue using physical optical medium and will not be OnLive-like.

“Right now, the higher-end game developers are really maxing out what the 360 is capable of doing. Even still, publishers are asking Microsoft to keep putting off the next generation of hardware as long as possible since they’ve already invested so much money in figuring out the current system’s capabilities," said Neal Robison, senior director of content and application support at AMD, in an interview with OXM Online web-site.

In 2011, the Xbox brand turns tend years old and the Xbox 360 turns six. OXM believes - based on industrial rumours mostly - that the next-generation Xbox 360 is due sometimes in 2014.

The new Xbox will inevitably considerably more powerful than the current one. In particular, Mr. Robison expects that the next-gen console will allow for ultra-realistic, rich visual experiences, with marked improvement for things like physics and artificial intelligence (AI).

"We are pretty darn close [to Avatar-like realism],” said Mr. Robison, but declined to comment  whether or not AMD is already working on the next Xbox console.

Actual design, performance and specifications of the Xbox next may currently be known only conceptually. For example, some believe that Microsoft should more thoroughly work on integration of things like Kinect into the actual hardware. In addition, many believe that Microsoft should integrate Skype as well as social networks into the Xbox next. What definitely not happen is that Xbox will not rely onto processing of games in the cloud and will not transit to 100% digital distribution.

"The folks in North America may have wonderful access to broadband, but there are a lot of places around the world where this device is going to be sold that don't have access, and [those people will] still want to buy product via physical medium," said Robison.

Is this going to be the same claim as PS2 having Toy Story-like graphics?

graphic textures will be a little better but it will shine better with anti aliasing frame rates and physics for the most part.

Heard this before. I'll believe it when I see it. Next gen consoles always get overhyped before they debut. Maybe if they didn't overhype them soo much before they come out and make it more realistic on what people can expect people wouldn't be disappointed.

IT WILL HAVE Avatar like graphics if they use a BRAN NEW 28nm HD7970 (3000+ stream processors) High end graphics card

But they wont and just end up with a 40nm (400 stream processors) GPU thats over 2 year old a HD5650 equivalent.

This will be an improvement over the old consoles but wont even come close to the graphics power of the PC.

We will be stuck on outdated old games with poor graphics ported over to the PC for another 6 years!!

I really hope i'm wrong but if the BRAN NEW! Wii-U with its 2+ year "old" GPU is anything to go by then this could end up the case!

Hardware in consoles will NEVER be as powerful as the graphics cards on the PC, both because of TDP and space/cost constraints, and due to the fact that PC graphics keep evolving over time, while the hardware in the consoles remains static during their useful life.

Having said that, there is no API overhead and developers are coding games directly to the hardware in the console. Look at Uncharted 2/3, God of War 3 and Killzone 2. Aside from weak textures, lack of anti-aliasing and lower resolution, the graphics themselves are not far behind the best we have on the PC.

Therefore an HD5850 in a console will be FAR more powerful than an HD7970 on the PC when all is said and done. John Carmack even admitted that PC graphics today are 10x more powerful than consoles but most of that power is wasted to due the API/OS overhead. PC games barely look 2x better than consoles, and most of that comes from sharper textures and games being run at 1080P or at 2560x1600 4AA. Games like BF:BC2, Metro 2033, Just Cause 2, Assassin's Creed series pretty much look the same on consoles and PCs (aside from texture and resolution differences I mentioned).

Finally, there is a lot of optimization that happens for consoles as well. At the end of the day, if next gen consoles have GPUs even 1 generation behind, that'll be a HUGE boost over current PC graphics (until PC will eventually catch up and pass it like they did in the last 3+ years).

While I don't believe we'll be at Avatar level of graphics for another 15-20 years, the next generation jump should be massive since consoles have held back PCs since Crysis (2007).

Are you serious? an HD5850 would be more powerful then a Radeon 7970 that's based on a new arch! LOL That's funny. So you say that no console will ever be as powerful as a pc yet you say an HD5850 would be more powerful on a console then a Radeon 7970 would be on a pc. LOL That's a hypocritical statement. Yeah ok.. What's next are you going to tell me that a ford Focus ST can beat a Ford Mustang Cobra with the govener switch off. LOL

He's not saying it is more powerful, he is simply saying they would be able to get more out of a 5850 equivalent on a console than a 7970 on PC, which is true, if you consider what they are doing with the very dated tech in the 360 and PS3

I have an SLI setup that cost more than 2 consoles, You really think some next gen console that costs less than one of the high end graphics cards is gonna be more powerfull? Pull the other one, That's like saying the next gen Ford Fiesta is gonna be faster than the Mustang!

Yes the consols are pushed to the max but all i'm saying is if they had NEW GPU's designed for 28nm inside then they would have more of a chance of Avatar like graphics and the life of the consol would be extended.

Its better then a OLD GPU's designed for 40nm

the shrink to 28nm gpus in store is only months away and if consoles start with the limitations 40nm brings then when they shrink to 28, 22, 14nm over the next 6 years they will still br shrinkin a GPU that was designed for 40nm and will be so much weeker then if they based it off a 28nm design..

Even a midrange 28nm card would be more powerful then a GTX580 if not the equivalent. and that would be awesome for consols and PC's

i think the pc would already have exceeded the avatar like graphics if there was a gpu standard so the developers could code it perfectly on it and write it so it would use almost every clock cycle like they are doing now whit the consoles. but they don't have time nor do they want to invest money in good pc programming and just port the games. just look at crysis they made the first one pc only and it looked super good and had the latest tach the second time they ported it and didn't use the latest tech like dx 11

i really think that games built for pc only are just test beds for what they want to do on consoles when each new gen of console hardware hits the market. so when microsoft and sony unvell the tech behind the next gen of consoles it will be a step forward from what microsoft learned this gen they will most likely be a combo chip that has multy cores and a 28 or even by that time 22 nm tech that will out perform pcs for a few years after realise just like consoles have done in every previous generation.
