Sony Corp. has started a campaign during which students who buy Sony Vaio personal computers can get a free PlayStation video game console, a $200 discount on PlayStation-branded hardware or software, or save 8% on the PC itself. The campaign is aimed at popularization of PlayStation among the U.S. students.

In a bid to get a free PlayStation 3 160GB, PlayStation Vita with Wi-Fi, $200 credit on PlayStation gear or save 8% on Vaio PCs, students need to get a Vaio S, T, Z or L-series custom PC or select ready-to-ship models from Sony's web-site. The systems will ship with Windows 7 operating system and will be Windows 8-ready (in some cases will be eligible for $15 upgrade).

Although Sony Vaio PCs cannot be called truly affordable - the most reasonably priced notebook participating in the campaign costs around $750 - with a free PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita their value increases significantly, even though neither the PS3 nor the PS Vita are goods necessary for learning.

Sony's campaign copies similar offerings from Microsoft Corp., which gives students free Xbox 360 4GB game consoles with a purchase of select Windows 7-based PCs in select places at this time of the year, and Apple, which provides savings and/or gift cards with the purchase of Macintosh PCs from June to September.
