Samsung Enters 4K Era with Upscaling Blu-Ray Disc 3D Player

Samsung Electronics yet has to announce its own 4K ultra-high-definition displays and televisions, but the company has quietly released one of the world’s first Blu-ray disc players capable of upscaling images to 4K resolution. The new player will be able to upscale Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D or any other full-HD content to ultra high-definition resolution.
Samsung BD-F7500 media player supports all current Blu-ray disc standards (including 2D and 3D), onboard decoding of Dolby Digital, Dolby True HD, DTS HD MA, DTS HD HRAD audio as well as upconversion of content in 1920*1080 resolution to 3840*2160 resolution. The player features integrated Wi-Fi 802.11, two HDMI outputs, one optical digital audio output. The BD-F7500 is Samsung’s new-generation Smart BD player with rich Internet feature-set and is capable of streaming movies and TV shows, downloading apps, shop online, browse the web, Facebook and Twitter glancing and more. The player can playback media in MPEG-2, MPEG-4, JPEG, DivX HD, AVCHD, MKV, WMV and MPO formats.
While the new player will be able to upconvert full-HD videos to UHD resolution, it will not upscale standard-definition videos to 4K. It is interesting to note that Sony’s own 4K X-Reality Pro video processor is also capable of upconverting HD digital broadcasts or Blu-ray discs content into 4K resolution, but cannot make standard-def images look like UHD. In case there will be no methods of high-quality upconvert of SD videos into UHD, the former will gradually die as the 4K will gain market share.
It remains to be seen whether Samsung’s BD-F7500 will be able to stream 4K video or playback such video from Blu-ray discs.
The new player is aimed at the owners of 4K UHDTVs, displays and projectors, therefore, its $259.99 price-point seems reasonable.
