Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari, thinks that software development tools that Sony will provide to game designers will be a way behind those by Microsoft, which will predetermine quality of early games and thus sales of hardware.

"I personally believe Microsoft is in a superior position, and the reason is Sony, whenever they change consoles, the software tools that they have are lame. A lot of times in the past they were in Japanese; not well documented and getting the software development community up to speed […] they may have been able to do it in Japan, but the American software community just says 'Oh boy, what a pain.' And a lot of people do not realize how strong the software community is at making the hardware platform sing and dance," said Nolan Bushnell in an interview with GameTrailers web-site, excepts from which were published by GameSpot web-site.

Although Sony Corp. has clearly done a good job in making the PlayStation 4 friendly to both developers and consumers, people with knowledge of the matter still think that the Japanese company will lose the next-generation console battle to Microsoft due to subpar development tools.

"Microsoft, because of their strong software tools, will end up with much better products sooner [and] easier, in my estimation. And with that, I think will be an advantage. And also don't forget, Microsoft actually has so much money to defend this. Plus, they have a good infrastructure with the [Xbox Live Arcade], with their online world," said Mr. Bushnell.

While Sony can supply moderate development tools to game designers, the PlayStation 4, at least based on specifications that we have at hands these days, will have a considerably better graphics adapter than the Xbox Next “Durango”.  While the difference between video games for the two upcoming platforms may be negligible early in the lifecycle of systems, it will raise and eventually will get huge. The latter factor will determine sales of the next-gen consoles as the platform with better quality games will sell better.

Atari files for bankruptcy! so advice from this dude inst very good!

i think Developers will flock to the console with the sales numbers and PS4 being a more powerful system will have an impact on those.

Your comment is so wrong I think you made my brain bleed.

The TL;DR version is Time Warner management's forcing of Bushnell out of Atari is the reason why Atari went to crap.

While I personally do hope Sony does keep up a serious effort with making the PS4 the developer's choice, Bushnell's comments on the Japanese game console market are still as true today as they were in the 70's. I'm pretty sure he's not meaning it as some sort of insult, it's just the way it's been.

Of course if Microsoft keeps moving the Xbox away from gaming and into their dubious "DRM service appliance" or "Advertisement marketing platform" I do think MS could manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

But that's another entire can of worms.

But you have to at least give Nolan some credit - if anyone knows about U.S./Japan developer relations... he was there from the beginning!

Only the fact M$ console will have always DRM crap, the above Atari dude's comment is good to be ignored. I'm actually afraid not to be exactly the opposite. Xbox = crappier specs, always DRM, later arrival....You digg?

I didn't know consumer choose a console because of the development tools, all this time i thought they looked at hardware and games.

As long as it uses an AMD APU, it's all good for consumers.

The fact is that who wins sales cant say right now. But i believe PS4 has the advantage because it has some striking features like no restrictions for used games, supports offline gaming and rumored better and more powerful hardware.

So far I've only read good reports about the software development tools for Sony PS4.
That clown has it so wrong.
So where is Atari in the gaming market again?
