Sony PlayStation 4 will not have to be always connected to the Internet to perform typical tasks, according to Sony Corp. In fact, the company has never planned PS4 to require a mandatory Internet connection all the time because there are areas where there is no stable and rapid connections to the web.

"Did we consider it [always-online]? No, we did not consider it. The main reason being that many countries do not have robust Internet connections. It makes sense for people to have Onternet connections to play online games, but for offline games there are many countries that we saw do not really have robust internet... We did not even consider that," said Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, in an interview with Game Informer, reports CVG.

Previously it was widely rumoured that Microsoft Corp’s next-generation Xbox Infinity will need to be in always on, always online mode. However, it recently transpired that the Xbox Next will be able to play single-player games or playback Blu-ray discs without mandatory Internet connection.

"You can go offline totally. Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don't want to connect to anyone else, you can do that," said Mr. Yoshida.

Even though it is now clear that neither Microsoft Xbox Infinity nor Sony PlayStation 4 will need to be connected to the Internet to play video games, it should be noted that the next-generation games will have a lot of social- and network-oriented functionality not available when there is no connection. As a result, without the web, the next-gen experience will simply be incomplete, it seems.

Used to be playing video games was more about being anti social but social like with playing with friends at your house or whatever. But hey most people assume because hey people only play online friends, knowing when video games didn't use to require internet to play ie pre ps2, that people used to just play video games without it being about playing with other people! Though it does seem kind of stupid to make every game be about playing online. Maybe tis me being old fashion or sounding anti-social but thats just how I feel as an old school gamer!
