Smart watches and even smart glasses have existed for years now, but remained niche products because of high price, limited functionality and poor user interfaces. Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple, believes that Google Glass will also become one of such niche products due to limitations in functionality. However, the head of Apple is confident that eventually wearable tech gadgets will prosper.

“There are some positives in the [Google Glass] product. It is probably likely to appeal to certain vertical markets, [but] the likelihood that it has broader appeal is hard to see,” said Tim Cook at the D11 conference organized by AllThingsD.

At present, glasses are still companion devices for smartphones and have limited interactivity and functionality by themselves.

At the same time, the head of Apple is clearly interested in various wearable gadgets, particularly those that can be worn on the wrist. However, given the fact that there are a lot of wearable technology products on the market right now, yet they are not popular, clearly reflects the fact that to make a successful wearable device it is required to invent a bunch of other technologies and create use-case scenarios that actually appeal to the people in general.

“There are lots of gadgets in the space. I would say that the ones that are doing more than one thing, there is nothing great out there that I have seen. [...] The wrist[-wearable tech] is interesting. [But] nothing that is going to convince a kid who has never worn glasses or a band or a watch or whatever to wear one. At least I have not seen it. So there are loads of things to solve in this space,” said Mr. Cook.

Interactive smart wrist watches is widely believed to be the product category that many companies, including Apple, are actively working on.

So what he is really saying is he hopes and prays google glass fails so that apple can release their own 'retina glass' glasses in a couple of years time...............then sue anyone who tries to release other types of connected glasses
