Sony Computer Entertainment on Monday announced that the PlayStation 4 (CUH-1000A series) computer entertainment system will come in “Jet  Black” color and will be available this holiday season in North America and Europe. The design of the PlayStation 4 is a vast departure from the look of the PlayStation 3 and more resembles that of the PS2.

When the PlayStation 4 will become available this year, it will be sold at a recommended retail price (RRP) of $399, CAD$399, €399, and £349. Despite the fact that the PS4 is a little more technically sophisticated game console than its arch-rival Microsoft Xbox One, it will cost $100 less in the USA. At present it is unclear whether Sony will traditionally sell the hardware at a loss in a bid to outsell the main competitor, or will actually try to minimize its losses. One thing that should be noted is that Microsoft Xbox One comes with second-generation Kinect motion sensor, whereas Sony's PS4 comes without any sensor. The new PlayStation Camera should be acquired separately for $59.

PlayStation 4 Design Finally Revealed

The internal design architecture of the PlayStation 4 system, from the optical drive and power supply unit to the cooling mechanism, has been pursed to keep the body as slim and light as possible to enhance the flexibility of the design.

The PS4 features a simple but modern design accentuated by its linear flat form factors. The surface of the PS4 body is subdivided into four sections, as if four blocks are stacked together making one figure, with disc slot, buttons, power indicator and vent placed within the slim interspace created between the sections. The power indicator designed atop the body will glow in a PlayStation blue color when the power button is turned on. The foreside and backside of the body is slightly angled; it not only gives users easy access to the power button and disc slot when placed either horizontally or vertically but also helps conceal the connected cables.

The black-themed color along with the matte and gloss finish adds a sophisticated look to the PS4 system as the next generation entertainment system and will should fit wherever it is placed. To some degree, the design of the PlayStation 4 resembles that of Xbox One, but the product from Sony can be placed both horizontally and vertically.

Extensive Support from Game Developers

The upcoming software lineup for PS4 from software developers and publishers will include Destiny from Bungie in partnership with Activision Publishers; Diablo III from Blizzard Entertainment; Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV from Square Enix; Assassin’s Creed  IV Black Flag and Watch_Dogs from Ubisoft; NBA 2K14 from 2K Sports; The Elder Scrolls Online from Bethesda Games; and Mad Max  from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, totaling more than 110 titles. PS4 has earned great support from a wide variety of game publishers, including many indie developers. Since February 2013, the number of developers joining has increased from 126 to 505.

Furthermore, from SCE Worldwide Studios, more than 30 titles, including 12 brand new IP, are under development, including Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, inFamous: Second Son, #DriveClub and The Order: 1886. Out of over the 30 titles under development, 20 titles will be available within a year from the PS4 launch.

Performance Inside

Sony PlayStation 4 is based on a semi-custom AMD Fusion system-on-chip that integrates eight AMD x86 Jaguar cores, custom AMD Radeon HD core with unified array of 18 AMD GCN-like compute units (1152 stream processors which collectively generate 1.84TFLOPS of computer power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two), various special-purpose hardware blocks as well as multi-channel GDDR5 memory controller. The PS4 will come with 8GB of unified GDDR5 memory sub-system (with 176GB/s bandwidth) for both CPU and GPU as well as large-capacity hard disk drive.

Sony PS4 will be equipped with Blu-ray disc drive capable of reading BDs at 6x and DVDs at 8x speeds, USB 3.0 connectivity in addition to a proprietary aux port, Gigabit Ethernet port, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR wireless technology as well as HDMI, optical and analog outputs. The new system will also utilize new DualShock 4 game controller with integrated touchpad as well as better motion sensing thanks to new PS4 Eye tracking cameras.

that is without "ps move" while the xbox is bundle with kinect but it is a good move to not bundle it to get the lower price point.

Sure did. The FBIbox lost the race due to inferior specs, DRM and privacy concerns. No one wants a potential extension of Echelon in their lounge room, like Orwell predicted. Ballmer surely has to go.

It doesn't. Post a link. They say they will do some sort of streaming to support older games, but that's not really the same thing.

I like most of your post except 2 points.

PS4 only has partial backwards compatibility

and

The xbox has DDR3 which is almost the same as GDDR5. GDDR5 is just modified ddr3 to have higher memory bandwidth but higher latency.

wrong DDR3 is much slower then GDDR5 and the memory throughput is also much less.

Can you stick a keyboard and mouse to this PS4 without some "fancy" USB adapter like in previews PS3??

The PS3 never needed a fancy USB adapter.. I connected a MS keyboard to one shortly after the PS3 came out, and my Slim version I use a wireless keyboard to all the time, both times it was MS keyboards, and I just plugged it in the USB.

And meanwhile we find out that Sony is gonna require you to pay for online gaming. And sony has left DRM up to the publisher ...same has Microsoft... they just didn't wanna tell you that yesterday.

Xbox one has 32 meg super fast memory as an alternate to pure pipes. So the hardware is just about the same in performance ... but will need more info and ultimately side by side demo to see for sure.

as for the camera spying on you.. pls put away your tinfoil hats especially if you continue to use a web cam. lol pshhhh
