Sony Computer Entertainment has intentionally dropped its motion-sensing camera originally known as PlayStation 4 Eye from the PS4 launch bundle in order to offer price below that of Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox One. While the move clearly allowed Sony to get a lot of applauds from potential customers, reducing the feature-set of the console may eventually play a bad joke with the platform.

Both Microsoft’s third-generation Xbox as well as Sony’s PlayStation 4 are based on semi-custom AMD Fusion system-on-chips with eight Jaguar general-purpose x86 cores, AMD Radeon HD GCN architecture-derived graphics processors and other special-purpose hardware units. Both consoles will have hard disk drives as well as Blu-ray disc drives. In general, the manufacturing cost of both consoles should be comparable (PS4 uses more expensive DDR4 memory, but Xbox One has some additional multimedia-related logic inside). Microsoft Xbox One will come with bundled Kinect 2 motion sensor and will cost $499 at launch. By contrast, Sony will not include PlayStation Camera with the PS4, which will be sold separately at $59, but will sell the console for $399.

As it appears, Sony did want to bundle the camera initially, but in the months prior to the E3 announcement the company decided to exclude the camera and drop the launch price to $399, reports IGN. While Sony will be able to potentially sell more game consoles initially, eventually it will face a problem of fragmentation.

By far not all PlayStation 4 systems will feature the camera, which is why game developers will likely be reluctant to design games that rely on the device. Essentially, Sony is dropping a function of the PS4 in order to reduce its launch price. By contrast, every single Microsoft Xbox One will come with Kinect 2 motion sensor, which means that every developer can take advantage of motion-sensing device.

Perhaps, Sony has a killer PS4 app for the PlayStation Camera that can persuade both gamers and developers to buy the sensor and develop for the sensor. Unfortunately, the probability of this seems to be quite low.

Sony did not comment on the news-story.

So the PS4 is $100 cheaper if you don't want to play "party dancing games", and $40 cheaper if you do, and 20% more capable as a gaming rig, and not made by M$, although it is made by Sony, but at least that's not M$, or Apple.

You forgot to mention that the Kinect sensor will swallow your soul...

Well said. And it's not everyone who has ample open space to gesticulate in front of a motion sensor.

Options are good.. and i still dont see anyone ever playing a FPS or racing game on the PS4 or Xbone 1 using motion..

Those are the two biggest selling games accounting for 70% of all console games so who cares about sensors!! lol no money in it

A simple search online to see how many second hand xbox360 sensors are up for sale and you will see how much of a waste of money they are.. no one wants them anymore

It's more than 20% since the GPU in PS4 is 50% more powerful, and the OS uses just 1GB of GDDR5, leaving 7GB for games vs. 5GB of DDR3 for XB1.

your an idiot? for one RAM ONLY MAKES HIT FASTER and for 2 MOST GAMES don't even use more then 4gigs of RAM? lol iv played games that are to powerful for console (ARMED ASSAULT) which requires 1gig of VRAM, and at least 2.5HZ processor while using less then 3gigs of ram. Console doesnt not support large address address aware larger then 4gigs . LOL any game you play on that system will never use more then 4gigs, the other 2 are for the system, since you cant dashboard and still have the game running it doesn't making a difference how much RAM you slap into it? YOU WILL NEVER USE MORE THEN 4 for any game at all, not on console, not even for PC. RAM is for multitasking, since ps4 only has 1 OS it cannot multitask between 2apps and a movie, also if the OS will never use that whole 6gigs, so it has potentaion that just sit dormate waiting for another OS to do soemthing, since it only has 1 it does nothing. LOL unlike X1 which has 3 OS for multitasking, which means that you can play a game, listen to music, and chat at the same time, taking in effect the full gigs weither you playing a game, or multitasking between 3 OS, x1 will use most of that, rather then powering up a ram chip that sits idle

the only reason ps4 is slightly fast is because it has idle RAM most of the time, dont tell me there apps require 6gigs of RAM either, neither does the OS, or the game ? so whats your point about RAM again? btw GDDR5 is quad pumped so its transfer rates are twice as high as DDR3, so if a GDDR5 card has a 128 bit bus and a DDR3 card has a 256 bit bus their memory bandwidth will be basically identical. dumbass . . . . .

Sony is a gaming rig, Microsoft is a home entertainment system, meaning they dont give a 100% flying fucks about playing video games all day? you talk about the senor taking up room, but a PlayStation, a DVD player, a surround sound, a TV box and music box takes up ore space, xbox does more things then just gaming? lol this whole thread looks like a bunch of sony fanboys and fangirls getting of on there gaming rig, lol buy a computer that just plays games and nothing else, then come back and tell me how it was?

Sony actually makes sense, Microsoft doesn't. Not everyone cares to use their body as a controller. lets face it a controller gives you more input and better feedback then any body sensor can. That and not everyone has enough space required in their place to use a body sensor system anyhow. If Microsoft will do the same thing and realize not everyone wants a Kinect they could drop the price of the xbox one to 400 dollars. I mean it's not like you can't always add one in the future if you desire for whatever the reason.

Comparing the prices of the sensors (PS4 $60, XBO $100+), I am guessing the XBO sensor is more advanced.

Beside action games, I am also into fitness games. And wife is into Just Dance. If XBO sensor can gives us better control on these games, then we unfortunately will be getting this "lower spec" console. If both sensor give me the same result, I will likely have PS4 as it should have more Japanese-influenced games.

Why not use Wii then? Got the best of those dancing, jumping stuff games.

Because Wii remote only sense hand motion (and not very accurately). And it is better not to hold a controller when dancing or exercising.

whatever! motion games are all pathetic-working-BS anyway!

Wii was successful because it's main selling point was the pathetic-working-BS.

There are games which work great with motion. They are just not the traditional games.

They need a very different contoller for motion sensing games - like Xbox-SexDoll
