Sony Computer Entertainment traditionally proclaims very high expectations for realism of video games with every new game console generation. However, in not all the cases ultra-hyped promises actually materialize. Nowadays, Sony does not vow that PS4 games will look like reality, but claims that many of the things, such as emotional expressions, will be dramatically more realistic than they are today.

“We are at the point in the PlayStation 4 generation where we will forget sometimes that we are looking at CGI rather than captured video. I do not think it will be indistinguishable. I just think that at times we will be able to forget, and it will depend on lighting and depend on the scene. But there will be moments when you forget. I do not think we will be consistently able to be at that point so if you used video, you really would be drawing attention to the fact that the actors really do not exist in the game’s world,” said Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PlayStation 4 and a spokesman for SCE, in an interview with Edge Online.

The PS4-exclusive games that Sony demonstrated do boast advanced graphics, but what is interesting is that facial expressions are something that Sony did not put a lot of attention to while presenting the new games. Therefore, it is very likely that Mr. Cerny talked about yet unannounced games.

Earlier this year John Gustafson, chief product architect at graphics business unit of Advanced Micro Devices and a renowned industry veteran, praised the heterogeneous system architecture of Sony PlayStation 4 as well as its ultra-fast unified memory sub-system. In addition to advanced graphics, Mr. Gustafson expected PlayStation 4 to provide high-quality physics effects.

“The PlayStation 4 blew me away but I am conscious about being too positive about it because of course we have other partners that are competing. […] It looks like they did an extremely good job of the engineering. The CPU and the GPU are on the same chip, which solves a lot of the problems, e.g., you do not have to toss things over to a graphics card and try to get them back and forth,” said Mr. Gustafson in an interview.

Previously numerous game developers have also emphasized very powerful memory sub-system of the PlayStation 4, excellent balance of general-purpose and graphics execution units, lack of bottlenecks, ease of game development thanks to industry-standard components as well as heterogeneous computing capabilities in general.

Sony PlayStation 4 is based on a semi-custom AMD Fusion system-on-chip that integrates eight AMD x86 Jaguar cores, custom AMD Radeon HD core with unified array of 18 AMD GCN-like compute units (1152 stream processors which collectively generate 1.84TFLOPS of computer power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two), various special-purpose hardware blocks as well as multi-channel GDDR5 memory controller. The PS4 will come with 8GB of unified GDDR5 memory sub-system (with 176GB/s bandwidth) for both CPU and GPU as well as large-capacity hard disk drive.

Sony PS4 will be equipped with Blu-ray disc drive capable of reading BDs at 6x and DVDs at 8x speeds, USB 3.0 connectivity in addition to a proprietary aux port, Gigabit Ethernet port, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR wireless technology as well as HDMI, optical and analog outputs. The new system will also utilize new DualShock 4 game controller with integrated touchpad as well as better motion sensing thanks to new PS4 tracking cameras (sold separately for $59).

When the PlayStation 4 will become available this year, it will be sold at a recommended retail price (RRP) of $399, CAD$399, €399, and £349.

LA Noire had excellent facial expression but very low facial textures. I think the same tech can be improved.

It can be greatly improved reason for the low textures is current consoles low amount of vram and low bandwidth to top things off. Next gen consoles in particular PS4 will have a whopping 176 gb/s for reference a 7870 has around 145 gb/s.

I dont think anyone cares about your GTX 680 or we would be reading an article commenting about it instead of this PLAYSTATION 4 article. you type of people...Yawn!

The fact that PC gaming with superior graphic power has yet to show what PS4 is claiming just show the usual Sony hype train...get off your high horse and wake up. Yawn huh well get some rest!

So... Explain to me how a consoles launching at $399 compares or relates to a graphics card that launched at $499 and is totally useless on its own.

I'd love to see your GTX 680 play the latest games in 6 or 7 years. What's that it can't, you've had to upgrade twice. What, each upgrade cost more than a whole PS4. Oh well, yawn

That doesn't make any sense! The reason he would have to upgrade is the graphics have improved 3 fold where as the silly console is still stuck using same direct x whatever for last several years. I have all gaming platforms so I am not being biased but pc does indeed shit on everything else just depends if you have the cash to have the best possible experience.

I've gamed on pc's as well but in the end went back to consoles as the cost and hassles of upgrading to play the latest games just wasn't worth it. The thing with PC's is that as your graphics card, processor etc go through their lifecycle their performance coping with the latest games gets worse every year. Whereas with consoles the graphics and games get better each year. When and if GTA V gets ported to PC I'd love to see that played on a pc with about 500mb of RAM and a 7 year old graphics card and processor. But it looks better than anything that was on the last gen consoles at release

So the Xbox 360 and PS3 can play a game like Metro Lastlight the way that a GTX 680 can max details 1080p?? Guess what developers are stuck developing for the same platform for many years..where is the innovation. It is PC that pushes technology. The GPU inside next gen console are equivalent to Radeon 7870-7850. Wake up man Consoles only hold back gaming

Could you be so kind to point out where I said that a decent graphics card on a PC won't result in better graphics. The fact is you decided to troll an article about the PS4 by boasting that you have a better graphics card. Better is definitely defined by the individual. I have never said that people shouldn't game on PC's, at the end of the day it's the variety of options for gaming which push the industry forward. If you have the time and money to spend £500 - £600 on parts every couple of years fair play to you but for most the better option will be to spend £300 - £400 on a console which will play all the latest games fine for the next 7 years.

From 4A's Oles Shishkovstov(Metro Lastlight)
"You just cannot compare consoles to PC directly. Consoles could do at least 2x what a comparable PC can due to the fixed platform and low-level access to hardware."

Given that Sony's going out of their way to emphasize that they're NOT there yet, and that they (CGI vs video) WON'T be indistinguishable, and that using actual video would highlight this difference, is the article title really appropriate?

But if they want to put their money where their mouth is, let's have more demos with in-game footage, shall we?

It's BS. CGI uses ultra accurate lighting techniques like raytracing or photon mapping and probably with insanely high numbers of samples per pixel AND supersampling. The meshes and texture quality are far above that which is used in console games. They won't be able to deliver on this, not this generation and not in the next. Maybe in the one after that.

You are wrong 100%. Knack already looks like a Pixar movie and it's not even tapping the PS4's full potential. Next gen will be much greater since you do realize that power doubles every 2 years so in 8 years it will be much much greater. Do the math.

Let's be honest true photorealist graphics or facial expression is impossible at this moment. Not even Hollywood is there. Remember Tron 2? Even if it was very good made, you could clearly tell the CGI of the young face of Jeff Bridges. So still a long way until there.
Personally I would prefer a serious increase in texture resolution (if you played ME3 with 4096x4096 textures, you'll know what I mean), increase in poly count and more physics animation for the body.
But higher resolution textures should be a priority since right now are the nr 1 closest thing to realistic graphics.

Well you are wrong because L.A Noire blurred the line between photorealistic animation and real animation. Then you have Uncharted 2/3, Last of Us, Heavy Rain. All are amazing. Next gen there's much more power and it will be possible.

I was not planning on buying any PS4 launch titles, but with a deal like this going on combined with some spare Amazon credit I have banked. http://www.ps4-deals.com/ps4-bundle-deals/
