Many market observers believe that emergence of 4K ultra-high-definition TVs in the next several years will shorten the life-cycle of next-generation video game consoles, but Microsoft Corp. seems to have a completely different opinion. According to a comment made unofficially, the forthcoming Xbox One is not only designed for ten-year lifecycle, but every single system should last for a decade.

After massive reliability-related scandal that the current-generation Xbox 360 faced early in its lifecycle, Microsoft decided to play it safe and put reliability of its hardware designs on top of everything, reports EuroGamer web-site. As a result, not only the Xbox One has been developed to stay relevant during its ten-year lifecycle, but every single console that will be sold during this period should actually last for ten years while being switched on.

Long lifecycles of gaming platform sound unbelievable, but it is likely that both Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 will remain supported by game developers for two or three years, which proves that a decade-long cycles are indeed possible.

What is interesting is that many features of Microsoft Xbox One require it to stay switched on, but in sleep mode. The software giant believes that the quality of the console’s design is so high and so reliable that even the consoles acquired in 2013 will be able to last till 2023, an unbelievable lifespan by today’s standards.

Microsoft Xbox One is based on AMD Fusion custom-designed system-on-chip with eight x86 low-power/low-cost Jaguar cores, AMD Radeon HD graphics with GCN architecture (with 32MB ESRAM/EDRAM buffer) as well as 8GB of DDR3 system memory. The console features 500GB hard disk drive, Blu-ray disc drive, 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity, Gigabit Ethernet, output of video with up to 4K resolution (3840*2160) using HDMI 1.4 as well as 7.1-channel audio. The new Xbox One comes with completely redesigned Kinect sensor that will feature 1920*1080 RGB camera, improved infrared sensor and enhanced voice controls. The console sports a number of functions, e.g. TV-cable pass-through that will seamlessly integrate it into the living room.

The Xbox One launch bundle will be available for $499.99 in the U.S., £429 in the U.K. and €499 in European markets. The console will be released in 21 markets around the world in November 2013.

This means a 10 year trailing commission for AMD. This is GOOD for consumers and GOOD for competition.

Oh lest I mention: no gameplay use @ 4K, no Wireless AC support (WHAT THE GAWD FCUK WERE THEY THINKING?!?!) etc etc.. You can do soo much more on a PC and can have a good income off it as it helps get you a career. Consoles? Passhh.. you'll likely get a massively fatter butt and herpes from it hanging with your cottage buddies! Har har..

At 10nm which is planned for 2017 - 4 years from now, there will be SOCs for smartphones and tablets same or better than in Xbox One. So the only option for Microsoft to extend Xbox One for more than 4 years is to make Xbox One as a tablet. Also we'll see how Xbox One survives first 1-2 years as PS4 seems like a much better option now.

But 10 years for Xbox One are absolutely UNREAL!

Unless they have built in upgrade ability, they may continue to operate, but not be competitive over that time frame.
