Sony Computer Entertainment has admitted a number of times that it has limited number of options to bring down the costs of the current-generation PlayStation 3 game console. However, in the light of the PlayStation 4 launch, the price-cut of the PS3 is something hard to avoid. As a result, the company is bringing "Europe-only" PlayStation 3 12GB version to the U.S. The product will cost $199.
Sony PlayStation 3 was the most expensive game console to manufacture when it launched in 2006. Apparently, it is still a problem for Sony to reduce its pricing below $299. By contrast, Microsoft now sells its Xbox 360 4GB system at $199 and is rumoured to be preparing a version of the system that costs $99. In June, Sony denied plans to cut the PS3 pricing, despite of the incoming launch of the PlayStation 4; at the same time, the company admitted the problem.
"The PlayStation 3 is a system where it has not been particularly easy to get the costs down. We continue to look at opportunities, there may or may not be any more, I genuinely cannot answer to that. But it will certainly be a more keenly priced machine in relative to PlayStation 4. It will sit there as a viable entry level machine for years to come. It will be different by territory as to how long its life is. There is still a lot of love for PS3," said Fergal Gara, vice president and managing director of UK and Ireland at Sony Computer Entertainment, in an interview.
This week it transpired that Sony Computer Entertainment America is gearing up to start selling PlayStation 3 12GB version - previously only available in Europe - in North America. The console will cost $199 and will thus compete directly against Microsoft Xbox 360 4GB.

1. FutureShop is a Canadian store. I think you may want to point that out.
2. $199 for a 12GB console with no games is a crap deal.
3. $269 gets you Uncharted 3 + PS3 250GB + PSN+ for 1 full year:
4. $269 gets you GTA V + PS3 500GB + 30-day PSN+ membership:
Conclusion: PS3 12GB is not such a good deal if you look at it closely unless you are not interested in PSN+, any free games and just want to swap out the HDD with an after-market one.
5. Why would anyone spend $200 on a 7-year console when for $200 more you can buy PS4 that will last 7 more years and play next gen games? The additional $200 spent on PS4 upfront works out to $200 / 7 years useful life = $57 a year only. It's better to suck it up and buy PS4 right away than play outdated games on PS3. If someone can't afford to spend $57 a year to own a next gen console when console games are $59.99 to begin with, they shouldn't be owning a console.

I agree with you on #1-#4, also consider how many games require mandatory installs and large patches+DLC will make 12GB painful.
However on #5 not everyone is wanting to buy a next gen system on day 1, Sometimes it's a value to not be an early adopter.
It's not uncommon for a new system only begin to shine until 12-18 months into the systems life cycle when more quality games become available. As pointed out, GTA5 is not promoted on the next generation systems.
Today there are many great games that can now be picked up for 1/3 their original cost and offer equal enjoyment for both of the current gen systems.
-Play and be happy.

Its no wonder the Wii U Console is such a flop, apart from the design that most ppl seem to hate and very overpriced when you compare it to the deals available on the PS3 and the 360 ATM
