Even though a number of companies have introduced their Nvidia Tegra 4-based devices, the latest application processor from Nvidia Corp. is far from being widely adopted and thus widely available in the form of actual products. In a bid to boost availability of Tegra 4-based media tablets, Nvidia Corp. has introduced its own Tegra Note slate that will be sold by the company’s partners.

The Tegra Note slate is based on Nvidia Tegra 4 system-on-chip (four ARM Cortex-A15 cores, power-saving core, GeForce graphics engine with 72 stream processors), Google Android 4.2 operating system [with over-the-air updates from Nvidia] and comes with 7” display with 1280*800 resolution. The gadget features stereo speakers on its sides; 5MP rear camera with autofocus and Chimera computational photography technology (but without a LED flash); a camera on the front; microUSB, microHDMI and 3.5mm audio connectors; a stylus with Nvidia’s DirectStylus tech support as well as microSD TransFlash memory card slot. The device comes equipped with a special protective cover.

Nvidia Tegra Note is designed by Nvidia and is manufactured under the supervision of the company by a contract manufacturer. In the next few months, Nvidia partners will be bringing Tegra Note to market worldwide with features that speak to local consumers, among them are EVGA and PNY Technologies in North America; EVGA, Oysters and Zotac in Europe; Colorful, Shenzhen Homecare Technology and Zotac in Asia-Pacific; and Xolo in India.

“Nvidia Tegra Note is a complete tablet platform, designed by Nvidia and brought to market by our partners. It embodies the Nvidia brand – from our hardware and software (right down to OTA updates), to our industrial design, accessories and network of partners in game development. It elevates the abilities of our partners, so they can provide tablets packed with innovation and features at prices they may not have been able to deliver on their own. In turn, Nvidia gains access to their deep sales and distribution expertise in regions worldwide,” said Matt Wuebbling, a director of mobile business at Nvidia.

Nvidia Tegra Note has suggested retail price of $199.

This is a good move by Nvidia. It must start making its own branded products to showcase its technology. AMD should be following suite.
