While it has been pretty clear for a while that Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 video game console is pretty open and lacks a number of limitations present on the PlayStation 3, it looks like the product will be even more liberal than expected. According to a high-ranking executive from Sony, PS4’s DualShock 4 controller will work perfectly with Windows-based PCs.

Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony worldwide studios, confirmed via a Twitter post that the DualShock 4 will support basic functionality when connected to a Windows-based personal computer, i.e., “the analog sticks and buttons will work just fine”. The good thing about such approach is that it will allow PS4 gamers to play PC games on a familiar controller, which naturally leads to PlayStation loyalty.

It is unknown whether the controller will support vibration or motion-sensing capabilities. The new controller has a touch-sensitive surface as well as special-purpose buttons, such as “PS” and “share”. Those buttons will unlikely be supported.

Joystiq web-site notes that many non-Microsoft controllers feature the XInput API, which makes them register to the PC as “Xbox controller”. The current-generation DualShock 3 lacks Xinput, but in case DualShock 4 can work with Windows, it may also feature XInput API, which naturally does not support proprietary capabilities of the device. However, in case DS4 does not use XInput, but relies on a special driver/API from Sony, then the controller may have a lot of interesting possibilities on the PC market.
