Despite of being extremely more capable than current-generation game consoles, Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 will not support playback of Blu-ray 3D discs at launch. While this may disappoint some technology enthusiasts that are early adopters of most innovations, this proves that BD-3D has failed to become popular among the masses.

Technically, both Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 should be capable of playing back and displaying stereo-3D content from Blu-ray 3D media. Two key things that are required are MPEG4-MVC decoder as well as 2x Blu-ray disc drive. Both consoles support all current and several future codecs and feature 6x BD drives. The two consoles also have custom HDMI connectors that were designed to support 4K video output, therefore they can perfectly output S3D content as well.

Microsoft and Sony have confirmed that their new consoles will not support playback of Blu-ray 3D at launch, but both implied that they can support such playback later on with the firmware update. Sony also stressed that while PS4 fully supports stereo-3D rendering for video games, no launch titles support S3D technology.

The exact reasons why neither of the next-gen gaming systems support BD-3D are unclear, but they should be fixable by software and/or firmware update. One thing is more or less obvious: should Blu-ray 3D be popular among the end-users, Microsoft and Sony would have supported it at launch.

Given the fact that the new era of ultra-high-definition – 3840*2160 – video is incoming, it is unlikely that existing stereo-3D technology, which relies on 1920*1080 resolution, will gain further popularity among content makers and consumers.

What this means is that the porn industry did not support 3D, so it failed.

Hard to hold on to your 3D glasses when your hands are busy.

Is it because they want to save the licensing fee on Blu-ray 3D?
Maybe they will sell the 3D movie playback as a downloadable feature.

And Microsoft said the "One" in "XBox One" means all-in-one...

They didn't include it as a launch feature so they could sell it as an after release add on.

Wrong. It was working day one. Os 1.0 didn't have it but 1.5 did and 1.5 was required to set up the ps4 day one

Not clear? How about >$5 per device they have to pay to MPLA for 3d Bluray support? Considering that the PS4 is already sold at a loss, another $5 per device would mean millions in extra costs. XBO is supposed to be sold at a "profit", but the margins are likely so small that $5 would mean a loss rather than profit. I can see MS implementing something like their Media Center addon for $20 bucks (the cost of licensing BD and other things they would also add), and then Sony following suit with either a paid app for it or making it "free" with PSN subscription.

So the ps3 supports 3D blu Ray with firmware update 3.5 but the ps4 doesn't at least not yet. sounds kind of odd.

Ps4 supported 3d games right out of the box. Tine 2 is 3d. Works fine. And my blue ray 3d discs play in 3d. Day one system os 1.5 fixed all that. My xbox one still can not do 3d. Since tine (thine?) was always a 3d launch title, I don't see how anyone thought the ps4 wouldn't have 3d.

3d will tax the xbox one with the ps4 outperforming by 50% on the HW level

Whomever wrote this article was dead wrong about the ps4 lacking in 3d. It was there and working day one lol.
I'll be happy to post 3d screen shots or videos of my ps4 playing a 3d game and 3d blu ray

Sony OWNS the blue ray format. Do you really think they'd not let it do 3d out of the box???

Sony has also stated the ps4 will do 4k still images, never 4k games (not enough high end gaming rigs have a enough power for those properly). 4k video is doable, but download sizes are huge and most displays won't support it.

4k won't even really take off for 5 more yrs. I'd leave 4k games and video to the ps5 and Xbox Two. We JUST got hd standardized in the past few yrs... 4k will take at least 5 yrs to be fully supported by devices and HW capable of rendering on it

I. have 2 nvidia 690s in my PC game rig. Playing at 2560x1600 is taxing enough even on quad sli

How did you get the 3D blu ray to work on your PS4? I did the update 1.5 day one and still the PS4 tells me that it does not support this format when I put in a blu ray 3D so I have to use my PS3. Also, I have a 4k tv but the PS4 hdmi output does not support it yet. I hope soon though.
