Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 significantly outsells Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox One worldwide thanks to broader availability and lower price. However, it looks like the U.S. market continues to be the stronghold of Microsoft as both of its currently available consoles outsold respective competitors in December, according a new report from NPD Group.

“The newest consoles from Microsoft and Sony are off to a tremendous start. Xbox One led consoles sales in December, while PS4’s two-month total makes it the best-selling console during the two-month launch window,” said Liam Callahan, an analyst with NPD Group.

According to Microsoft, the company sold 908 thousand Xbox One game consoles and 643 thousand Xbox 360 game systems in December. Sales of both were higher than sales of their respective rivals, Sony’s PS4 and PS3, last month. Together, Xbox One and Xbox 360 held 46% of the hardware market share in the U.S. and showed a 10% year over year growth from December 2012, the software giant claims.

Sony did not reveal exact PS4 sales numbers in the U.S. for December, but stressed that the PlayStation 4 remains the cumulative leader for next gen console sales in the U.S. since the launch on November 15, 2013. The company implied that it could not fulfill all demand for its latest game console in the USA.

“We sold every PS4 available at retail in the U.S. and were out of stock in December due to overwhelming consumer demand. With more than 4.2 million PS4 systems sold worldwide, it's clear that the PS4's gaming and entertainment features are resonating with large audiences and we are doing our best to provide additional inventory in all of the 53 countries where it's available,” said Dan Race, senior director of corporate communications at Sony.

It is noteworthy that even Nintendo managed to substantially boost unit sales of its Wii U game console in December.

“Hardware sales of the Wii U were also positive with December 2013 marking its highest month for unit sales month so far,” said Mr. Callahan.

I’m not sure if you know what the expression 'leaving something in dust' means. Data leaking out from the NPD results shows the ps4 sold ~45k less than the xb1 despite selling in far more country's (which has stretched their stock thin) as they prepare for the Asia launch in Jan and Japan launch in Feb. Its also sold out, whereas xb1 stock is plentiful. To be honest the xb1 should have mopped the ps4 up, that they were so close in ms' strongest market is very worrying.

All it means is If Sony had met market demand, Microsoft would be eating their dust.
The fact Microsoft didn't sell out tells us more!

The inference behind this statistical anomaly is that Sony products are somehow inferior or less attractive to the consumer.
Just proves statistics can be manipulated to prove whatever point they want to make.
